Sufjan Stevens has released Worst Christmas Ever!, a holiday compilation that brings a new original together with selections from his extensive Christmas recordings.
Released November 6 through Asthmatic Kitty, the collection contains 15 previously released selections and one new song, “On This Christmas (It Only Gets Better).”
The new recording is Stevens’ first Christmas original in nearly 15 years. Its arrival gives the retrospective a present-day starting point rather than making it solely a return to older material.
The compilation draws from Songs for Christmas and Silver & Gold, the expansive collections released in 2006 and 2012. Together, those projects established an unusually large seasonal catalog.
Stevens’ Christmas-recording tradition began in 2001 with a seven-song release made as a gift for friends and family. This new album offers a smaller entry point into music that originally developed over many years.
The official music video for “On This Christmas (It Only Gets Better)” provides a first stop for listeners approaching the collection through its new addition.
Worst Christmas Ever! is available now. Stevens’ official Christmas website details the project, and his verified artist links direct listeners to the video and release.
