Stefon Diggs Returns to the DMV on One-Year Deal With Commanders

Stefon Diggs is returning to the DMV after officially signing with the Washington Commanders. The veteran wide receiver joins his hometown team on a one-year contract, adding another established playmaker to an offense built around quarterback Jayden Daniels and leading receiver Terry McLaurin.

The agreement is worth up to $12 million with incentives, according to ESPN. Diggs had openly discussed the possibility of playing near his Maryland roots earlier in the offseason, making the move both a major football decision and a meaningful homecoming for the four-time Pro Bowler.

Diggs showed last season that he can still produce at a high level, catching 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns with the New England Patriots. It marked his seventh 1,000-yard campaign in eight seasons and helped New England reach Super Bowl LX.

Washington had been searching for a dependable receiving threat to complement McLaurin, and Diggs immediately gives the team one of the league’s most experienced route runners. His ability to create separation, operate from multiple positions and make difficult catches should give Daniels another reliable option on crucial downs.

The signing also brings Diggs back to the area where his football career began. He grew up in Olney, Maryland, attended Good Counsel and later played three seasons at the University of Maryland, where he recorded 150 receptions for 2,227 yards and 14 touchdowns.

With 11,504 career receiving yards, 74 touchdowns and seven 1,000-yard seasons, Diggs arrives in Washington with the experience to make an immediate impact. Pairing him with Daniels and McLaurin gives the Commanders a more dangerous passing attack and creates one of the most intriguing hometown stories entering the 2026 NFL season.
