Sam Fender’s version of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” soundtracks John Lewis’ 2026 Christmas advert, with musicians from his home region joining the recording.
The Rolling Stones cover was released November 3. It features a choir from John Spence Community High School, Fender’s former school, alongside Easington Colliery Band.
The recording accompanies “Gloria and Pickles,” the retailer’s 20th Christmas campaign. Kristin Scott Thomas plays Gloria, while Paul Whitehouse supplies the voice of Pickles.
Directed by Lucy Forbes and created with Saatchi & Saatchi, the three-minute film follows a grandmother finding a more personal way to connect with her grandchildren.
The song is also receiving seven-inch and CD editions. Those releases pair the new cover with Fender’s 2020 recording of “Winter Song,” which is reaching physical formats for the first time.
John Lewis says its sales profits will support Action for Children. Profits from sales through Fender’s official store will go to Teenage Cancer Trust.
The full advert accompanies the new recording. The official campaign announcement details the recording, the film and the charity arrangements.
