Ken Mask, MD Is Building a Legacy Where Medicine, Art and Storytelling Meet

Some careers are easy to summarize with a title. Ken Mask, MD has built the kind of career that makes that nearly impossible. He is a board-certified diagnostic radiologist and Fellow of the American College of Radiology with decades of experience in medicine, but his professional life extends far beyond the hospital. Mask is also a filmmaker, bestselling detective novelist, visual artist, children’s author, game developer, motivational writer, and founder of a literacy nonprofit. Based in New Orleans, he has created a body of work that moves between medicine, film, literature, technology, education, and fine art without treating any of those pursuits as secondary to the others. That creative range did not develop overnight. Originally from North Carolina, Mask earned undergraduate honors in Philosophy from UNC Chapel Hill before attending Duke University School of Medicine. His background in philosophy is an interesting foundation for someone whose career would eventually become so multidimensional because much of his work begins with questions. Whether he is examining an image as a radiologist, developing a story as a filmmaker, creating a painting, or finding a new way for children to interact with a familiar game, Mask has consistently approached ideas with curiosity rather than accepting that something must remain the way it has always been. One of the best examples of that mindset came directly from his family. Mask was playing tic-tac-toe with his five-year-old son Joshua when Joshua wondered why his seven-year-old sister Kenya could not play with them. Mask explained that tic-tac-toe was traditionally designed for two players, but Joshua immediately questioned the rule and asked why the game could not be played by three people. Instead of dismissing the question, Mask turned it into an idea. That conversation became Tic Tac Mo, a reimagined version of the classic game that introduces a third player, Y, alongside X and O.

The story behind Tic Tac Mo represents much more than the creation of a mobile game. It reflects Mask’s willingness to look at an established structure and ask whether it can become more inclusive. What began as an ordinary family interaction became a project now available through app stores worldwide, and the concept connects naturally to the larger themes running throughout his work. Mask is interested in creativity that solves problems, invites participation, and encourages people to think differently about rules that are often accepted without question. His children have played an equally important role in his literary work. The Griffin the Dragon children’s series began in 2011 after Joshua won a stuffed dragon at a county fair in Lafayette, Louisiana, and named it Griffin. Joshua and his sister Kenya eventually began co-authoring stories with their father, creating a children’s world that could entertain young readers while addressing meaningful subjects. Illustrated by Simmie Williams, the Griffin series has explored topics including chess, healthy eating, and how children can handle bullying, giving the books an educational purpose without removing the imagination that makes children’s stories engaging. That commitment to literacy also exists outside Mask’s own books. As the founder of Books To You, a children’s literacy nonprofit distributing books in New Orleans, he has extended his belief in reading and education into direct community work. The connection between his children’s books and nonprofit efforts shows that literacy is not simply another creative subject for Mask. It is part of a larger belief that children should have access to stories and educational resources that encourage them to think, learn, and imagine possibilities beyond what they already know. Chess has become another major thread connecting Mask’s creative and educational interests. His 2019 film Scandalous Moves uses 1850s New Orleans as the backdrop for the story of Paul Morphy, one of history’s greatest chess minds. The project went on to win the Filmmaker’s Choice Award at the San Diego Black Film Festival. Rather than presenting chess solely as competition, the film allowed Mask to connect strategy with history and storytelling while also drawing from the culture and history of the city that has become central to his creative identity.

Mask returned to chess from a different perspective with the 2023 documentary Building Minds with Chess. Instead of looking primarily at the game’s history, the documentary explores the cognitive and social benefits chess can offer children. The project earned Official Selection recognition at the New Orleans Film Festival and the Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase in Cannes, France. Chess also appears elsewhere throughout Mask’s work, including Chess: The Quiet War and the children’s title Griffin the Dragon and the Game of Chess for Kids, making it clear that he views the game as a tool for education, strategy, patience, and personal development. His film catalog continues well beyond those chess-centered projects. Mask has developed more than a dozen projects spanning different subjects and genres, including Hoghead Harris Plays the Blues, Interview for a Wife, The Praying Grandma, Henson, JC 44 BC, The Diary of Maria Gonzalez, Mansa Musa, and others. His upcoming The Ghost Witch of Bayou Noir pushes his storytelling into gothic thriller territory, further demonstrating that he is not interested in creating within only one genre or being identified with a single type of film. The same creative freedom can be seen in Mask’s visual artwork. Working in jazz abstraction and portraiture, he has created the Faceless Genius series, which reimagines legendary musical figures including Beethoven, Michael Jackson, Mozart, and Johann Sebastian Bach. Instead of relying on conventional portraiture, the series uses bold movement, color, and improvisational strokes to communicate the energy surrounding its subjects. By removing familiar facial features, Mask creates space for viewers to interpret genius through emotion and artistic movement rather than simply recognizing a famous face. His visual work has also reached audiences well outside New Orleans. In partnership with curator Gatsby Randolph, Mask’s art has been exhibited at Duck Walk Vineyards in the Hamptons as part of the From Harlem to the Hamptons show and through private exhibitions across the Côte d’Azur and Europe. The international reach of his artwork adds another dimension to a creative career that has already moved from medical institutions to film festivals, bookstores, children’s programming, mobile applications, galleries, and community organizations. Mask brings many of these ideas together in The 180 Rule of Motivation & Etc., a genre-bending collection containing essays, personal letters, poetry, and a full-length stage play. The central philosophy behind the project is straightforward: whatever is standing in the way can be turned around. Fear can become fuel, doubt can become determination, and an obstacle can become the starting point for a different direction. It is not difficult to see that philosophy reflected throughout Mask’s own career, where an unexpected question can become a game, a child’s stuffed dragon can become a book series, chess can become cinema, and a medical professional can simultaneously build an international creative catalog. Ken Mask’s story ultimately challenges the idea that success requires reducing yourself to one identity. Medicine remains an important part of who he is, but it has never prevented him from exploring the other ideas competing for his attention. His work demonstrates that creativity can exist alongside professional discipline and that success in one field does not require abandoning curiosity in another. For Mask, being a physician, filmmaker, writer, painter, father, educator, and entrepreneur are not conflicting identities. Together, they form the larger story of a modern Renaissance man determined to continue creating.
