For Clay Burnett, music has always been rooted in discipline. He spent 15 years studying piano, earned a Bachelor’s degree in music, and developed as a classically trained pianist long before he began releasing his own work. That background now finds an unexpected outlet in light hip hop, where intricate riffs, layered instrumentation, and reflective lyrics give his classical foundation a new setting.
Burnett has been an artist for roughly 20 years, but his journey into released music is relatively recent. In 2025, he began experimenting more seriously with synthesizers and electronic music, eventually moving toward commercial releases that blend his musical training with hip hop. The result is a sound built around instrumentation and musical detail, while his lyrics explore spirituality, social issues, and the ways personal experiences connect with religious principles and teachings.
That combination is also where Burnett has found one of his biggest challenges. Developing a sound that feels authentic has meant figuring out how to bring his classical background into a genre with very different traditions. At the same time, he wants to reach new listeners without compromising the convictions behind his writing. Rather than treating spirituality as a separate subject, he uses it as a lens through which he examines life, society, and his own experiences.
So far, the audience may still be growing, but Burnett sees meaning in every step forward. Reaching 100 monthly listeners on Spotify became a personal milestone as an independent underground artist building an audience from the ground up. His experience has also taught him something many new musicians discover only after releasing their first records: making the music is only part of the job. As Burnett has learned, putting music through a distributor does not automatically put it in front of listeners. Promotion requires its own time, strategy, and persistence.
Now, Burnett is focused on writing material for a full length album, giving him an opportunity to explore the ideas and sounds he has been developing over the past year. His goal over the next year is to continue growing beyond Spotify and build a stronger presence across platforms including Apple Music and YouTube. More importantly, the album gives him room to push further into the space where his classical training, electronic experimentation, hip hop influences, and spiritual perspective meet.
Clay Burnett may still be in the early stages of building his audience, but he is no longer simply searching for a sound. He is learning how to turn years of musical discipline into something that sounds unmistakably like him.
