Carly Rae Jepsen is turning complicated family bonds into dance-floor fuel on “Motivation,” the latest preview of her upcoming double album Day and Night.
Carly Rae Jepsen released “Motivation” on August 21 via Interscope Records, pairing a candid reflection on family expectations with a house-inspired pop backdrop. The track arrives as another look at the “Night” half of Day and Night, her 24-song double album due September 18.
According to Universal Music Canada, Jepsen wrote the song with Cole M.G.N., who also produced it alongside Kyle Shearer. Jepsen said the idea began during a fall visit to her hometown, where the sound of leaves under her feet sparked a rhythm and led her to think about the passion, pressure and expectations within her family.
“Motivation” ultimately became what Jepsen described as a family anthem that makes room for the more complicated parts of close relationships. She also framed the song broadly enough to include chosen families, giving its theme a wider emotional reach beyond the experiences that first inspired it.
The accompanying music video was shot in Paris and directed by Caio Viera, who also handled Jepsen’s “On Wires” visual. The clip brings together a varied group of people around the song’s family-centered theme and features fashion designer, actress and RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Gigi Goode.
“Motivation” is the second release to spotlight the album’s dance-driven “Night” side, following “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor.” Earlier singles “On Wires” and “After All” introduced the contrasting “Day” material, which Jepsen’s team has characterized as brighter, more organic and influenced by psychedelic pop.
That split is central to Day and Night, with Jepsen using two distinct sonic palettes across its 24 tracks. As the September 18 release approaches, “Motivation” shows how the project’s late-night side can pair maximalist pop production with subject matter that is considerably more personal than its dance-floor setting might initially suggest.
