Matthew Perry’s sister, longtime friends and previously unreleased family material are central to a three-part documentary arriving on Netflix on October 27.
Matthew Perry is the subject of one of Netflix’s premieres this coming week. The platform’s October 23 viewing update confirms that The One About Matthew Perry begins streaming Tuesday, October 27, placing the actor’s life and career at the centre of a documentary series.
The project draws directly from the Perry family’s archive. According to Netflix’s detailed preview, previously unreleased photographs and videos accompany testimony from his sister, Mia Perry Bowick. The series combines those materials with memories from friends who knew him before and during his Hollywood career.
The announced contributors include longtime friends Roger Castillo and David Pressman, alongside creative collaborators. Director Jonathan Lynn worked with Perry on The Whole Nine Yards, while actor Nate Torrence appeared with him in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Mr. Sunshine.
Mary Robertson directs the series for Maxine Productions, part of Sony Pictures Television. Robertson also executive produces alongside Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman. Lora Moftah is co-executive producer, with Jessica Call credited as producer.
In an October 21 interview with PEOPLE, Robertson explained that reading Perry’s memoir prompted her initial interest in making a documentary. She later developed connections with people close to him, contacted his sister and discussed the project with Netflix.
Preserving Perry’s humour was part of the filmmaker’s aim. Robertson told PEOPLE that she and Bowick shared an interest in showing him as a person rather than only a celebrity or television character. She also hoped the finished series would be funny enough to suit its subject.
