Fleetwood Mac: The Chain, the authorized documentary directed by Frank Marshall, will premiere worldwide on Apple TV on January 29, 2027.
Apple’s October 22 announcement confirms both the film’s title and its January 29, 2027 release date, describing the project as the band’s first fully authorized documentary. That description concerns the band’s authorization of the project, not a claim that Fleetwood Mac has never previously been the subject of a film.
The project brings together the perspectives of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks through interviews and archival material. Apple’s original announcement specifically identified archival interviews with the late Christine McVie, preserving her voice within the account alongside material assembled for the new film.
The title comes from “The Chain,” the only song on Rumours credited to all five members, according to Apple. The January premiere also arrives in the year of the album’s 50th anniversary, linking the release schedule to a specific landmark in the band’s history.
The wider musical history reaches beyond that one record, with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tracing Fleetwood Mac’s development from a 1960s British blues band into the pop-oriented sound associated with its later California era. The group entered the Hall in 1998, a useful reminder that the story spans changes in style as well as familiar songs.
Marshall’s earlier music films include The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and The Beach Boys, so this is not his first documentary centered on a long-running group. The Kennedy/Marshall Company and White Horse Pictures are producing The Chain, with Mark Monroe credited as writer and executive producer.
Apple first announced the project in November 2024, when it was still untitled and had no release date in that announcement. The film is now set to reach Apple TV more than two years after that initial announcement, with the five Rumours-era members represented through new and archival material.
