JUILS left Nashville for London and wrote the words she almost said

JUILS spent five years in Nashville, then moved to London and wrote 'What I Meant to Say' about the things she almost said.

The London-based indie-pop artist reflects on relationships while living in a new country on her EP ‘What I Meant to Say’

New beginnings can lead to self-reflection. After a handful of years living in Nashville, Tennessee, JUILS has brought her creative process to London.

The indie-pop artist reflects on her first year in the new country, exploring love, cultural differences, and the complexities of relationships on her second EP ‘What I Meant to Say’, out October 2.

Born and raised in Boston, the artist moved to Nashville to pursue her passion for songwriting. JUILS spent five years in Tennessee, dedicating herself to developing her craft and signature sound.

It was here that JUILS’ self-titled debut EP was born, exploring her views on growing up and falling in love through different experiences and emotions. The collection touches on what love can look like from the perspective of a woman in her mid-twenties.

Following her move to London, JUILS began re-examining her relationship to communication, intimacy, and how people relate to one another, especially across cultures. On her second project ‘What I Meant to Say’, JUILS dives head-first into these ideas, writing in the voice of her inner thoughts while grappling with complex emotions.

‘What I Meant to Say’ explores the intricacies of love and communication while examining how we relate to others from different backgrounds. The four-track project consists of ‘Fake It’, ‘Lesson’, ‘Kinda Wanna’, and ‘To Each Their Own’.

Each song focuses on a moment when these cultural differences make JUILS question her feelings, how to express them, and whether she should say it at all. Throughout these songs, JUILS voices out loud what she wanted to say but was unsure she could.

While her debut EP explored what love could look like, ‘What I Meant to Say’ explores how to communicate within it. Rooted in the artist’s experience moving to a new city, the record is a snapshot of an in-between state.

After leaving her Nashville years behind, JUILS finds herself building a life in London. She explores relationships that make her reconsider things she thought she understood. However, the EP doesn’t seek to find resolution to these experiences but instead finds comfort in the uncertainty, sitting with feelings that exist only inside her head.

‘What I Meant to Say’ is a collection of thoughts rehearsed internally, imagined conversations, and words that almost made it out of her mouth. Through indie-pop melodies that are easy to remember but experimental in their production, the four tracks are full of unusual textures and choices that go beyond what’s expected from basic pop.

While each song holds a unique emotional space, the pop melodies tie them all together, creating a film-like atmosphere, close yet personal but larger in scale. ‘What I Meant to Say’ is a project that can only be written in the moment, unable to be revisited later.

‘What I Meant to Say’ is out October 2.

JUILS will be releasing her second EP ‘What I Meant to Say’ on October 2, following her December self-titled debut.
