Vietnamese independent artist Kiey continues to shape an increasingly distinctive musical identity with METROMIRAGE, his ambitious third studio album. Moving between alternative pop, R&B and electronic influences, the record finds him exploring the softer, more introspective corners of contemporary pop, pairing intimate songwriting with carefully considered production and a strong sense of atmosphere.
At the heart of the project is fun fiction, featuring Cece Trương, a breezy, city-pop-inspired offering that captures the excitement and uncertainty of youthful romance. Built around acoustic textures and understated rhythms, the track unfolds with an effortless warmth, its English-language lyrics and references to late nights in Shinjuku giving it a distinctly cosmopolitan character. There is an appealing lightness to its arrangement, but beneath the polished exterior sits a songwriter interested in the small details of human connection.
That introspection becomes more pronounced elsewhere on METROMIRAGE. white boy i sat next to on a plane drifts into more melancholic territory, weaving soft electronic textures, piano-pop and understated R&B around subdued vocals and delicate harmonies. Similarly, plan thiet favours restraint over grand gestures, allowing its piano-led arrangement and intimate vocal delivery to carry the emotional weight. Both tracks reveal an artist comfortable with vulnerability, understanding that sometimes the most affecting moments arrive through simplicity.
Much of the album’s character comes from Kie’s hands-on approach to his craft. Taking responsibility for songwriting, production and visual development, he has carefully constructed a creative world that feels cohesive without becoming overly polished or predictable. Its distinctive blue-toned aesthetic further reinforces the atmosphere surrounding the record, giving METROMIRAGE an identity that extends beyond its individual songs.
With his third studio album, Kiey continues to look beyond geographical boundaries while remaining rooted in personal expression. METROMIRAGE is a considered and quietly assured collection, revealing an artist increasingly confident in his instincts and unafraid to let atmosphere, emotion and melody speak for themselves. As Vietnam’s independent music scene finds a wider international audience, Kiey makes a compelling case for a more expansive, creatively independent vision of contemporary pop.
