Mariah Carey Opens Christmas Season With a Nod to Her Hidden Rock Past

Mariah Carey’s latest holiday announcement makes room for a song from her 1990s alternative-rock project before the Christmas music begins.

Mariah Carey opened the 2026 holiday season with her annual “It’s Time” video on November 1. This time the familiar transition begins in a New York club, where she appears in a punk-inspired look before the clock turns to November.

The first part features “Hermit,” a song associated with Someone’s Ugly Daughter, the 1995 project Carey made with her friend Clarissa Dane under the name Chick. The unexpected selection connects the seasonal skit to a chapter of her catalog that remained largely hidden for years.

As NBC reports, Carey moves from the stage into the crowd before the scene changes at midnight. Her familiar whistle-register declaration follows, and the opening of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” signals the shift into holiday mode.

Carey shared the announcement on her own social accounts, continuing the yearly tradition of marking the shift from Halloween into the holiday season. The clip brings both sides of the performance together, moving from the rock song into her familiar Christmas sound.

The rock project has drawn renewed attention this year. At the January MusiCares tribute honoring Carey, Foo Fighters and Taylor Momsen performed songs from Someone’s Ugly Daughter, as The Associated Press reported.

The holiday video arrives days after the expanded Glitter anniversary edition, which revisits another part of Carey’s catalog with vault recordings and remixes. Her newest seasonal clip brings a very different pair of musical worlds together in one seasonal announcement.
