Kenneth Dabney is turning being underestimated into a business blueprint
For entrepreneur Kenneth Dabney, building a successful business has never been simply about creating something people can purchase. It is about creating something people can believe in.
The New Orleans native is the Founder and Creative Director of Below Average Clothing, a Louisiana-based fashion and lifestyle brand built around a deeply personal message: being underestimated does not have to determine your future. Dabney knows that feeling firsthand.
Growing up in New Orleans, he experienced moments when people questioned his potential based on his size, appearance, or assumptions about his abilities. Rather than allowing those perceptions to define him, he turned them into motivation—and eventually into the philosophy behind Below Average. The name represents the labels people place on others. The mission is about refusing to let those labels become the ending.
Betting On Himself
That mentality also shaped Dabney’s approach to entrepreneurship. After spending considerable time and resources supporting other people’s ideas, he realized it was time to invest that same energy into his own vision.
He began betting on himself. Since then, Below Average has evolved beyond a traditional clothing company into a growing ecosystem connecting fashion, music, culture, community, and storytelling.
The brand’s expansion into music is one of its latest chapters. Released in August 2026, the Below Average EP features seven tracks from New Orleans artists Willhebe, 3dNatee, GreatWhite, MaxxP, Jay Jones, and Kidd Kidd, exploring purpose, family, faith, adversity, perseverance, prayer, and personal growth. It is another example of Dabney using entrepreneurship as a vehicle for storytelling.
Building A Brand People Can Experience
That vision extends beyond the products and into the community. During Below Average’s 2026 back-to-school car show and giveaway, approximately 250 backpacks were distributed to children outside the brand’s store. Families, businesses, organizations, car enthusiasts, and supporters came together for an event centered on entertainment, connection, and giving back.
For Dabney, that’s what a modern lifestyle brand can become. The goal isn’t simply to put a logo on a shirt. It’s to create an identity people recognize and experiences they remember. At the center of that philosophy is “BIG GOD little me,” a phrase reflecting Dabney’s emphasis on faith, humility, and keeping the mission bigger than himself.
New Orleans remains at the heart of the vision, providing the cultural foundation for a brand that continues to expand across creative spaces. Clothing creates the identity, and the music gives it a voice. Community creates connection, while entrepreneurship provides the foundation. And the message ties it all together.
Nonetheless, Dabney isn’t only building a company that tells people to believe in themselves. He’s building one that demonstrates what can happen when you finally do. You can be counted out without staying counted out. For Kenneth Dabney, that’s more than a slogan. It’s the blueprint.
