Jhené Aiko is officially returning with Westside Whimsy, a California-inspired album arriving this week after a six-year gap between full-length solo projects.

Jhené Aiko has confirmed that her new album Westside Whimsy will arrive Friday, September 11. The R&B singer announced the release on social media, making the long-teased project official just days before it lands.

According to Complex, the album artwork presents Aiko in a close-up portrait against a teal backdrop with crystal tears on her face. The title itself has been in circulation since January, when she began teasing the name and imagery through her Instagram Stories.

Aiko offered a clearer sense of the album’s creative direction during a California wellness retreat in April. She said music from the 1990s has been a major influence, while also pointing to West Coast car culture, surfing, beaches and a laid-back California atmosphere as inspirations for the project.

The Westside Whimsy name also appeared earlier this year through Aiko’s limited-run Erewhon smoothie collaboration, giving fans another clue about the era before the album announcement. At the time, the recurring title helped connect her recent lifestyle projects with the California-centered world she was building around the music.

Westside Whimsy will be Aiko’s first studio album since 2020’s Chilombo. That record debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart and went on to earn three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.

The new release arrives after months of hints rather than a lengthy traditional rollout, with the full tracklist and potential guest appearances still largely under wraps at the time of the announcement. With September 11 now locked in, Aiko is set to begin her next album chapter six years after one of the biggest releases of her career.
