The inspiration behind the song comes from something deeply personal. McRedmond has always considered himself a daydreamer, a habit that has followed him from childhood into adulthood. That sense of imagination naturally shaped the song’s playful lyrics and memorable melody. Lines such as “Cherry soda and buzzing wires, Summer flip flops and bicycle tires” paint vivid snapshots of a simpler era, capturing the innocence and warmth that defined much of the music from that generation.
The creative process unfolded surprisingly fast. It all began with a melody played on acoustic guitar, long before any lyrics existed. McRedmond shared an early video of himself humming the tune on Facebook, where encouraging feedback inspired him to complete the song. Within just a few hours, the lyrics came together, proving that sometimes the strongest ideas arrive when inspiration is allowed to flow naturally.
Recording Honey Pie Daydream became a collaborative effort while still preserving McRedmond’s personal touch. He first tracked acoustic guitars, drums, and scratch vocals in his home studio before traveling to Athens, Ohio, where longtime collaborator Myron Hart contributed lead guitar, bass, engineering, and production. Returning home to complete the final vocals and mix allowed every element to blend into a warm, polished recording that stays true to its vintage roots.
One of the song’s greatest strengths is its simplicity. Whether played through a phone speaker, a car stereo, or a home sound system, Honey Pie Daydream carries the same easygoing charm. Its conversational vocal melody and bright instrumentation make it the kind of song that lingers long after it ends, equally suited for a summer drive, a backyard gathering, or an evening around a campfire.
As the opening track from Send Me to the Lions, Honey Pie Daydream sets an inviting tone for the rest of the EP, with future singles like High Horse and Goody Two Shoes already on the horizon.
