TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Lisa Jo doesn’t fit neatly into a single role, and she’s not trying to. The Tampa-based artist, who also works as a writer, producer, engineer and label executive, has built her career on doing everything herself and doing it without compromise.
Known both as Lisa Jo the artist and SoundPulse on the production side, she is the CEO and founder of SoundPulse Record Label. Her work spans multiple genres, blending electronic, hip-hop and rap influences into a sound she says reflects who she is rather than what trends demand.
“Music isn’t something I picked up,” she said. “It’s something I am. There’s no separating it.”
Her independent path has led to measurable recognition. Lisa Jo ranks among the top 20,000 electronic artists globally, the top 50,000 in hip-hop and rap, and within the top 100,000 artists overall. Industry publications have taken notice, with one describing her as “multifaceted in a way that makes most contemporary artists look like cardboard cutouts.”
But her story goes beyond rankings.
Lisa Jo describes a life shaped by adversity, including childhood trauma, teen pregnancy, homelessness, early widowhood and serious health challenges. She says those experiences drive both her work ethic and her songwriting.
“I’ve lived through things most people don’t come back from,” she said. “My story is about surviving all of that and still pushing forward.”
That perspective shows up in her music, which she describes as raw, direct and unfiltered. She credits her lyrical ability and storytelling as key factors that set her apart in a crowded industry.
“I don’t chase algorithms or trends,” she said. “I say what I need to say, how I need to say it.”
Working independently has been one of her biggest challenges. Without the backing of a major label, Lisa Jo has handled every stage of production herself, from writing and recording to mixing, mastering and publishing. She has done so while managing ongoing health issues.
Her approach, she said, comes down to focus and persistence.
“I don’t quit,” she said. “That’s the difference.”
Despite the obstacles, she points to her versatility, prolific output and refusal to compromise as defining moments in her career so far. She also cites growing recognition from industry figures and a steady stream of media coverage as signs of momentum.
Looking ahead, Lisa Jo speaks with a mix of humor and ambition. While she jokes about uncertainty in the long term, her immediate goal is clear: expand her reach and solidify her name.
“I’m going to be a household name,” she said. “That’s the plan.”
For now, her focus remains on building her audience and continuing to release music that reflects her experiences and perspective.
“I’ve come a long way in a short time,” she said. “And I’m not done yet.”
