Los Angeles-based artist Pyrenees Love Triangle releases his six-track EP Babylon, fusing together Madchester-style electronica with Dance Punk and psychedelic rock, resulting in a bold, genre-blurring statement. The project marks a clear artistic progression from his previous work on Send Medicine, with multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Julian Hacquebard expanding and refining his sound.
At the core of Babylon is the use of both analog warmth and digital precision. While drum machines act as the rhythmic foundation, live bass and guitar textures provide a sense of movement and depth. There are moments where synths shift between hypnotic repetition and melodic clarity, creating a dynamic between density and space.
The opening track, ‘Slithering Fluxus’ is richly layered, portraying where groove meets abstraction. Its hypnotic rhythm carries a subtle punch, with the bass acting as a steady pulse beneath shifting textures. The lyrics lean into surreal and disorienting imagery, heightening the track’s underlying tension while adding to a dreamlike, immersive atmosphere. This is followed by ‘Elemental Pieces’, which feels more striking in its texture, carrying a greater sense of grit alongside a subtle, haunting quality. The shift in tone is immediate, highlighting the EP’s dynamic range and its ability to move between contrasting moods without losing flow.
Whereas on the title-track Babylon, the instrumentation leans into a more trippy, experimental sound, framed by ambient textures. The vocals sit in alignment with this mood, blending sonically rather than standing apart. The synths are particularly prominent in the mix, often pushed to the forefront, creating a transportive soundscape.
The closing track, ‘Flowers Uptown’ fully showcases Pyrenees Love Triangle’s expansive sound. The textures lean toward a softer, more restrained side, yet remain sonically layered, allowing the emotion within the lyrics to come through clearly without being overshadowed by the mix. This creates a strong balance between intention and tonality, highlighting a careful attention to detail in the production. Babylon ultimately demonstrates how genre-blurring can be effective when curated with precision, standing as a confident and compelling debut.
