The track reflects the artist’s personal mindset and determination to keep pushing forward no matter the circumstances.
“MENTAL STRAIGHT” is a self-produced record created by Cyffa Leyenda, showcasing his hands-on approach to music and his commitment to expressing real emotions through his art. The record carries an uplifting and motivational energy, encouraging listeners to stay determined and never give up regardless of the situations they face.
The song was crafted over the course of a full year, with Cyffa Leyenda carefully developing the record before it was fully polished at DJ RICK FLARE’s studio, the former engineer behind the hit song “FINETO,” which charted at #96 in 2021. The final result is a record that highlights Cyffa Leyenda’s raw style and dedication to authentic storytelling.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Cyffa Leyenda explains:
“Everything that people told me I couldn’t afford or get without a degree or because of the cost of things I still went and got it. If it’s a $1k imma get it cause I know it’s going to make me $10k. Everything in life is a sacrifice and I’m here on this earth to give it my all. I’m still out here working a job getting this money, taking care of my kids myself and doing what I love.”
He continues by sharing his perspective on passion and dedication.
“When an artist tells me they had to stop what they loved because of their family, kids, anything that means they never loved it. When you love something you do it every day homeless, broke, kicked out, locked up, hated on, no streams, cheated on it doesn’t matter cause what matters is what you want 100%.”
The creative process behind the song began in a simple setting. Cyffa Leyenda explains that the beat for “MENTAL STRAIGHT” was made in his living room, where he turned the volume up and performed the lyrics while creating the instrumental.
“I made this beat in my living room turned the volume all the way up and performed the lyrics as I was making the beat. Every song I do I have to express my feelings in every song retro, alternative, rap, hip hop it doesn’t matter. I’m from Virginia we express how we feel, well the real ones do.”
The lyrics for the record were written during a challenging time in his life. Cyffa Leyenda recalls writing while working at Home Depot, balancing work and raising his 5 and 6 year old children while continuing to pursue music.
Reflecting on that period, he shares:
“I remember writing these lyrics working at Home Depot having my 5 & 6 yr old with me just grinding working hard full time no family support and their mom not in the picture. At the same time dealing with my mental messing with me because I felt that the women I were dealing with hated me at the wrong times when I was low and needed them.”
Despite the challenges, Cyffa Leyenda emphasizes the importance of staying strong and continuing forward.
“But I have to be strong for my kids and myself no matter what I am going through because I have nobody to lean on anyways. To me I’ve been through so much a fallback is a quick comeback because I’ve been there before through it all.”
