Season 8 of The Rookie is around the corner, and the long-running ABC series is shaking things up with new faces. One of the standout additions is John West Jr., a Los Angeles actor whose path to primetime has been anything but ordinary.

From Football to Acting

West, who grew up between Los Angeles and Chicago, first made a name for himself on the football field. But after a brief professional career, he shifted gears in the mid-1990s and began building connections in Hollywood. Thanks to his longtime friendships with Martin Lawrence and Robert Lawrence, West landed opportunities on the sitcom Martin—a moment that helped launch his acting career.

A Career Built Step by Step

Since then, West has put in the work, guest starring on shows like New York Undercover, Southland, Empire, and appearing in the feature film Waist Deep. He also recently shot a couple of episodes for the hit drama 9-1-1, which are expected to air soon. Known for his persistence and good-natured personality, West has kept himself active both in Los Angeles and New York, earning respect from colleagues across the industry.

Making His Mark on The Rookie

Now, West is stepping into The Rookie as a high-energy officer who isn’t afraid to move fast. Viewers will see his character grow quickly—from following orders to giving them. There’s also a romantic twist in his storyline, though producers are keeping details under wraps.

Originally brought on for eight episodes, West may be sticking around longer than expected. According to producers, he fits the part naturally and brings a presence that stands out on screen.

What Fans Can Expect

Season 8 will roll out 18 episodes filled with action, drama, and humor, with West helping to fuel the pace. Behind the scenes, he says the energy was just as high, with plenty of outtakes and on-set moments that kept the cast sharp and engaged.

Looking Ahead

Beyond The Rookie, West is also working on projects with his close friend Robert Lawrence, proving he’s got no plans to slow down.
The Rookie Season 8 premieres January 2026 on ABC and Hulu.
