Toronto songwriter Ekelle rhymes about her real-life experiences. Crafting a unique sound she called Hood Pop, combining hip-hop, pop and R&B for contemporary sounds with a street edge. The artist’s latest track, ‘Mommy’, speaks to her unbridled confidence as a performer, setting her antagonistic lyricism over a punchy beat with 808s and sleek instrumental chops. Bouncy percussion leads listeners to a smooth sung vocal hook, showcasing the other side of Ekelle’s vocal talents, an angelic and delicate balance against her assertive and bold flows.
”They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” Ekelle explains “but some people take it to the extreme. I see these bitches copying my IG posts to my cover art, I’ve definitely inspired a lot of people who refuse to acknowledge it so I thought I’d let them know what to call me, ‘Mommy’. I’ll continue to guide the way for my children. If other artists ask nicely, I’m more than happy to share my knowledge. This song is about paying respect to those making moves.”
Rooted in candidly rapping out lived experiences and playing with metaphors as she sings, Ekelle’s dynamic musical experiences represent her individuality and her love for various genres. Her 2023 song ‘Flo’, garnered thousands of streaming listens, was named one of Complex’s ‘Best Canadian Tracks of the Week’, and received airplay on Vibe 105 and Flow 98.7.
As an artist at Cymba Music Publishing, Ekelle has garnered placements with Hudson and Rex (2022, 2023), The Stanley Cup Finals (2022), a ZARA France mobile ad (2022), and Popularity Papers, (2023). To refine her industry knowledge, the artist has also completed the Digital Music Management Internship program with TMU led by Liam Killeen (2021), and the RBC Launchpad Music Entrepreneurship Program (2023), and participated in SOCAN’s Song Camp Mondays (2023).
