As a child, Cataleya Meadows wrote poetry and took piano lessons. But it would take her years to work through her own past experiences before she began releasing her own songs, work that has become an outlet for the complex emotions tied to buried memories, perfectionism, obsession, and transformation, and the identities we build to survive.
With every song she writes, Meadows imagines a scene, a story, or even a whole world. From there, she writes her lyrics, finds melodies and chords at the piano, and carefully builds an arrangement that reflects the story’s particular atmosphere.
It’s the origin story of her new single, out October 2, 2026, “Skin in the Game.” What does perfectionism cost? How does ambition transform into obsession? Meadows’ latest dark pop and cinematic single confronts these questions head on, interrogating the chase for perfection that ends up consuming the person chasing it.
A single song can take you so many different places. “Skin in the Game” draws listeners into the bruised-knuckle world of the stage, following a performer through moments of invented fantasy, with no safety net in sight. When the spotlight comes on, there’s nowhere to hide, even when the body becomes the final stake in the game. The song’s intimate verses and larger-than-life chorus explore the human condition through performance and self-discipline.
“I always put my skin in the game,” she sings on the chorus.
The song walks the fine line between self-improvement and self-sacrifice, the act of giving up parts of yourself to the work you do.
On “Skin in the Game,” Meadows dives deep into the complexity of control, surrender, and transcendence, using her signature spoken word bridge to talk it through with herself, while inviting the listener to eavesdrop.
“Skin in the Game” arrives from a forthcoming album that explores the many themes that continue to permeate Meadows’ songwriting: Masks, alter egos, trauma, obsession and self-destruction. Here, the independent singer-songwriter and producer crafts a world of dark pop and alternative pop that reveals the complexity of the self.
