If you think surfing and rock ‘n’ roll don’t mix, you haven’t met PRiiMAL. This electrifying duo—Teza Mckenna and Ian Walker—is rewriting the rules of music, blending rock, rap, and a touch of country grit into a genre they’re calling Future Rock Rap.
From the Waves to the Stage
Teza Mckenna isn’t your average frontman. He’s a former pro surfer, the unmistakable voice of Australian surfing, and, oh yeah—he turned chairs on The Voice Australia Season 13. When he belted out Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell, none other than Adam Lambert was hooked, calling Teza’s performance “the ’80s fantasy I always wanted.” Not bad for a guy who walked away from music in the ‘80s to chase waves.
Fast forward to 2020. With live sports shut down and commentating gigs on hold, Teza picked up his guitar again. Within a year, he was selling out venues with a Billy Idol tribute show. Enter Ian Walker, a seasoned guitarist who’s played alongside some of the biggest names in the business. The two joined forces, and PRiiMAL was born.
The Sound of the Future
PRiiMAL doesn’t just play music—they create an experience. Think hard-hitting rock riffs, hip-hop beats, and a stage presence that grabs you by the collar and pulls you in. Their breakthrough moment came when they hit the studio with American hip-hop producer The Applejuice Kid in Melbourne. That session led to Better Life, a track that pushed them into uncharted territory. With heavy bass lines, rap-infused verses, and a high-energy rock backbone, PRiiMAL realized they were onto something fresh.
“I was asked to rap for the first time,” Teza recalls. “We soon realized we were creating something different—a real fusion of old school and new school.”
What’s Next for PRiiMAL?
With over 30 songs already streaming on Spotify, PRiiMAL is ready to take their sound to the world. They’re gunning for major festival stages, big live shows, and even a shot at having their music featured in films.
“This is about bringing something fresh to the table,” Ian says. “We’re reimagining what rock and rap can sound like, and we’re doing it with that Aussie edge.”
If you’re into high-energy performances, genre-bending sounds, and music that makes you feel something, PRiiMAL is the band to watch.
