‘Vintage Finesser’ Finds JJ Finesser Looking Forward Through His Soul Roots

Family milestones and an enduring connection to classic soul shape JJ Finesser’s fifth studio album, Vintage ’Finesser.

With his fifth studio album, “Vintage ‘Finesser,” JJ Finesser brings a new perspective to his independent career, looking beyond professional milestones to the relationships and experiences that make them meaningful.

His radio achievements already tell a story of persistence. “Perfect Match” reached 859 spins in a week, while “Live Life” expanded from five reporting stations to ten within seven days and later registered 776 weekly spins. Both became college radio No. 1 records, alongside “I’m Still There” featuring Gem Goldy and “Ms. Finesser.” Support from Nasty Nes and Fatman Scoop, together with airplay across Urban and Rhythmic formats, helped establish a presence built through successive releases rather than a single breakthrough.

The new album arrives at a different kind of turning point. Recently engaged and preparing for marriage, JJ follows “Ms. Finesser,” released in June 2026, with a sequel he considers the closing chapter of his life before that commitment. Its triumphant outlook comes from recognizing what he has built while preparing to take on new responsibilities. Success, in this context, includes having someone with whom to share the future.

The title reaches back to an influence that preceded his own recording career. At four years old, JJ watched The Temptations biopic with his grandfather, forming his earliest memory of Motown. “Vintage ‘Finesser” directly honors Eddie Kendricks’ 1978 album, “Vintage ’78,” connecting that childhood introduction to the work he creates today. With his grandparents having celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July 2026, the project also places his upcoming marriage within a much longer family story.

That attention to personal history has shaped his catalog from the beginning. JJ started making music in 2012, performing at campus events and open mics as a 17 year old freshman at Santa Clara University. His debut album, “Nalej,” followed in 2014, before graduation in 2016 brought a move into corporate America. The experiences of that working life subsequently informed “Year of the Dog,” released in 2018.

Family became an especially significant influence during 2019, when JJ spent a year living with his great-grandfather, a World War II veteran, following his great-grandmother’s death. His great-grandfather’s passing later that year inspired “Classic OG” in 2021. Viewed alongside those earlier projects, the fifth album continues an established creative instinct: allowing changes in his own life to determine what deserves a place in his music.

As a hip hop project, “Vintage ‘Finesser” stands out through the specificity of its concept. The Kendricks homage gives its title a meaningful connection to musical history, while the approaching wedding supplies a clear reason for reflection. JJ’s strength lies in bringing those ideas together without reducing his story to career statistics, presenting an artist whose ambitions have grown more personal, not less purposeful.
