The next Songwriters Hall of Fame ballot puts chart-leading performers beside the writers behind some of pop and R&B’s most enduring records.
Lady Gaga, Ne-Yo and Kandi Burruss are among the 2027 Songwriters Hall of Fame nominees announced November 5. The selection opens the voting process for next year’s induction class, rather than naming the eventual honorees.
The official ballot separates songwriters from performing songwriters. Gaga and Ne-Yo appear in the latter group, alongside Shakira, P!nk, Sia, Jack White and other artists whose recordings have made their writing widely familiar.
Burruss appears in the songwriter category, with credits that include “No Scrubs” and “Bills, Bills, Bills.” The category also includes will.i.am, Stargate and Dan Wilson, placing writers associated with different eras and styles in the same election.
Eligible voting members have until midnight EST on December 14 to submit their choices. They may select up to three nominees in each category, while eligibility for induction begins 20 years after a songwriter’s first commercially released song.
The range extends well beyond recent pop: Grandmaster Melle Mel, WAR, America and ZZ Top are among the performing nominees. That mix makes the ballot a meeting point for several songwriting traditions rather than a ranking of current chart popularity.
A nomination is not an induction. The names announced this week will now go through the member vote before the eventual class is honored at the 2027 gala in New York City. For now, the ballot offers recognition of the writing careers behind the familiar artist names.
