House of Yaz Blends Music, Culture and a Message of Self-Empowerment

AUGUST 27, 2026 2:35AM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For Virginia artist and entrepreneur Yaz, a crown represents more than status. It represents ownership, heritage and the decision to recognize one’s own value.

That idea sits at the center of House of Yaz, the Newport News-based creative brand through which Yaz combines handcrafted luxury crowns with a music career spanning conscious hip-hop, R&B and pop.

The multi-genre artist, mother, wife and entrepreneur is building the brand around a message of authenticity and empowerment, particularly for women balancing family, ambition, creativity and business.

“I’m not just building buzz — I’m introducing a movement,” Yaz said in describing the vision behind her work.

House of Yaz began as a way to connect multiple parts of her creative identity rather than forcing them into separate spaces.

The crowns are designed as wearable art, with each piece intended to symbolize power and heritage. Her music carries many of the same themes, addressing resilience, self-worth, financial independence, cultural pride and the realities women encounter while pursuing their goals.

Yaz said she creates for mothers working on their ambitions after their children go to sleep, wives trying to maintain both relationships and individuality, and entrepreneurs determined to build something of their own.

Her goal is not simply to tell those women they are capable of more. She wants her own career to demonstrate it.

For years, however, Yaz said she struggled with feeling as though her career was progressing more slowly than those around her.

Comparing herself to other artists became creatively draining until she changed the way she viewed her timeline.

Instead of seeing delays as wasted time, she began recognizing the experience she had accumulated — learning the business, developing her craft and gaining the resilience necessary to create something independently.

That period also led Yaz to reconsider her identity as a musician.

Her early performance experience included club stages, but over time, her work shifted toward conscious music and culturally focused events. She later performed during BET Awards Weekend in 2025 and has appeared at Black cultural festivals and empowerment events across the East Coast.

The transition represented more than a change in performance settings.

It marked a broader artistic reinvention.

Rather than producing music around what she believed the industry expected from her, Yaz began focusing on subjects she felt more closely reflected her life and values.

She also rejected the expectation that an artist must remain confined to a single genre.

Yaz moves between conscious hip-hop, R&B and pop, allowing the message and emotion of each record to determine the direction.

For her, that versatility reflects the people she is speaking to.

The women listening to her music are not one-dimensional, she said. They may be mothers and business owners, wives and creatives, professionals and artists. Yaz believes her music should be allowed the same complexity.

That refusal to be easily categorized has become part of the identity of House of Yaz.

The brand is designed to celebrate what Yaz describes as unapologetic self-expression while encouraging women to build financial independence and maintain control over their own stories.

She views ownership as especially important.

Rather than pursuing attention through controversy or compromising the message behind her work, Yaz said she is focused on creating something capable of lasting beyond a temporary viral moment.

Her upcoming album is intended to represent that clarity.

Yaz describes the project as a reintroduction — a record reflecting who she has become after years of searching for an artistic lane that never completely fit.

The project will incorporate conscious hip-hop, R&B and pop while also drawing from sounds throughout the African diaspora.

Its themes include motherhood, ambition, healing, resilience, Black joy, financial empowerment and learning to reclaim confidence after periods of uncertainty.

The album is also closely connected to the future of House of Yaz.

Over the next several years, Yaz hopes to grow the company from crowns and music into a broader lifestyle brand.

Her vision includes fashion, home goods and live experiences where music, entrepreneurship and community intersect.

She imagines House of Yaz pop-ups where women can be crowned, hear live performances and meet other creatives and business owners.

Yaz also wants education to become part of the brand.

Future plans include workshops and resources centered on branding, monetizing creativity and building generational wealth.

For Yaz, providing practical information is just as important as offering inspiration.

She wants other women to understand how to turn their creativity into something sustainable.

That mission has also shaped her definition of success.

While Yaz hopes to expand her audience, secure brand partnerships, place music in television and film and continue performing on larger stages, she does not measure achievement solely through industry recognition.

Family remains part of the equation.

She wants her children to witness what it looks like to pursue a purpose while building something that can eventually be passed down.

She also wants other women to see that motherhood, marriage and ambition do not have to exist in competition with one another.

House of Yaz is ultimately built around that principle.

A woman does not have to decide whether she is an artist or an entrepreneur, a mother or a leader, ambitious or devoted to her family.

Yaz believes those identities can exist together.

The crown is her reminder.

And as House of Yaz continues to expand, she wants more women to recognize that they are allowed to wear every one they have earned.
