FatCat’s current “New One” campaign brings fresh attention to a Miami performer balancing music, screen work and life as a student-athlete.
A recording career does not tell the whole FatCat story. The 17-year-old Miami-born artist, whose name is Darriel Cannon Jr., has pursued music alongside acting and competitive football, with each placing him in front of a different audience. “New One” is the focus of his current campaign, but the interest around it also opens a window onto the independent path he is building outside the studio.
On the field, Cannon is a running back at Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami. His name appears among the Class of 2027 offensive prospects highlighted by football writer Larry Blustein, placing his athletic work within South Florida’s competitive high-school landscape. That commitment is part of a wider schedule that also includes education, recording and performance, rather than a separate identity he has left behind for entertainment.
The screen is another established part of that experience. Cannon is credited as Eric in Dear Best Friend, the 2021 drama directed by DeShon Hardy. A film role and a music release demand different kinds of preparation, but together they make clear why FatCat is developing as an entertainer across formats instead of presenting himself only through a single song.
“New One” itself dates to January 5, 2024, with Cannonball Currency Music, LLC listed on its release. The current push is a renewed invitation to discover the track, not a claim that it has just arrived. FatCat described his aim in an October Spinex Music interview as making an energetic, confident record that listeners could quickly connect with and return to.
His musical background runs further back than that release. A WSVN feature in May 2021 documented his early songwriting and the attention surrounding “Options,” while his catalog has continued to grow across hip-hop and pop influences. Cannonball Currency Music provides the independent framework for that work, with ownership and creative control remaining part of the career he is building rather than something reserved for a later stage.
Community involvement adds another connection to home through Cannonball Youth Club and its work with young people. Taken together, music, film, football and that local commitment offer a fuller introduction to FatCat than a list of promotional milestones alone. For listeners meeting him now, “New One” is an accessible starting point in an ongoing story with roots firmly in Miami.
