Apidae releases another new track ahead of his upcoming debut album entitled ‘All I Need’. The track is built around a tight and energetic drum groove and an equally lively synth pattern. As your focus is pulled in further you hear a contrastingly calming piano part, which is followed by the vocal part coming in, an ethereal and evocative performance that gently flows over your body. Other synths fly past your ears in sections where the vocals become even more celestial. The production feels as though it blends a space-aged fantasy with a deeply human connection, its electronic, but also effortlessly dynamic.
On the new release, Apidae says, “All I Need is a further expression of the sonic theme of the album, the composite of organic and synthetic sounds and instrumentation. Its fundamental motif is a nylon string guitar and midi sequenced arpeggiator that play exactly the same part throughout the entire song, note-for-note, with the intention of blending into a single voice. Between them, the pronouns ‘you’/‘your’ and ‘I’ repeat about 45 times throughout the song, more than once a line on average. But the song was never written as a conversation between two people, more a communication with less controllable aspects of oneself. Things that sometimes feel as if they’re creations of a separate consciousness – endorphins, hormones and chemical signals.”
Apidae is the production project of London-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Greg Hummell, growing from what was initially a solo endeavour into a larger collaborative venture. For its first release in 2015, Apidae signed to Dumont Dumont, a Stockholm-based independent label. The project has gone on to gain praise from publications such as The Line of Best Fit and Q Magazine for its “hypnotic forward thinking production, and exotic pitched percussion”.
With a debut album on the horizon, Apidae is set to continue to expand its fanbase with its eclectic list of genre and artist influences that allow it to connect with all listeners. Be on the lookout for future releases.
