Angel Wong pits the guzheng against distorted guitars to dissect broicism

On ‘Seeing Red’, Angel Wong sets a traditional Chinese string instrument against crunchy guitars and uneasy harmonies to examine how the manosphere twists Stoicism into emotional repression.

A few weeks after their debut single ‘Hide n Seek’, Angel Wong has shared ‘Seeing Red’, a sharply-crafted alt-indie pop single. Replete with the guzheng, distorted guitars and more, the track sees the London-based cross-genre pop artist explore masculinity, consumer culture and the various contradictions that exist within modern life.

The fourth single of 2026, ‘Seeing Red’ builds on Angel Wong’s musical landscape with its amalgamation of instruments, including the traditional Chinese string instrument, the guzheng. This sits alongside distorted guitars, acoustic strings, angular harmonies and indie-rock inflected vocals, presenting a sound that is a blend of both Eastern and Western influences. Its sonic palette leans into a more angular direction than Angel Wong’s previous works, with crunchy distortions and acoustic textures colliding with unconventional harmonic movements. The song is as catchy and restless as it is deliberately a little uncomfortable to listen to, embodying the same contradictions it seeks to capture thematically.

Thematically, ‘Seeing Red’ covers the red-pill and ‘broicism’ movements, examining the ways in which parts of ancient Stoicism are decontextualised and reappropriated in the manosphere to justify emotional repression and relentless self-optimisation. Angel Wong explores the question of what happens when our emotional lives are hitched to notions of productivity, status and personal value. The lyrics move between the ‘zoo-ified’ suburbia and the siren call of substance-induced escapism, exploring the idea of performative desire and how we come to construct our identities in a world driven by material values.

Following their debut single ‘Hide n Seek’ on 8th May, ‘Seeing Red’ is the fourth single of 2026 from Angel Wong, the Hong Kong-raised, London-based cross-genre pop artist who seamlessly weaves their roots in Hong Kong and the Miao culture of Guizhou with their time spent on London’s jazz circuit, including a performance at the EFG London Jazz Festival and collaborations with Grammy-winning artists. Previously, Angel Wong shared ‘North of the River’ on 17th July, a pop-funk that satirised the art of social posturing; ‘Know That’ on 21st August, a song that confronted the guilt and resentment that arises when you are the person who ends a relationship. Each of Angel Wong’s songs possess a sense of scale and energy, all while staying laser-focused on hooky songwriting.
