A24 Reportedly Eyes Record-Breaking $65 Million Deal With Backrooms Director Kane Parsons

At just 21 years old, filmmaker Kane Parsons may be preparing to secure one of the most significant agreements of his rapidly growing career. Following the remarkable success of his feature directorial debut, Backrooms, Parsons is reportedly in discussions with A24 over a three-year first-look deal valued at approximately $65 million.

Should the agreement move forward, it would reportedly become the largest filmmaker deal A24 has ever offered. The proposed partnership could cover projects across both film and television, giving the independent studio an early opportunity to develop and distribute Parsons’ future work. Negotiations are said to be ongoing, meaning the final value and complete terms could still change.

The reported offer follows the enormous commercial success of Backrooms, which grew from Parsons’ viral YouTube horror series into a major theatrical release. The film has reportedly become A24’s biggest box-office attraction to date, placing its young director among the most in-demand emerging filmmakers in Hollywood.

Parsons first introduced audiences to his interpretation of the Backrooms through a series of unsettling found-footage videos released under his online name, Kane Pixels. The project used computer-generated imagery, empty yellow corridors and distorted environments to create a sense of isolation and psychological unease. His videos attracted millions of viewers and demonstrated how an internet-born concept could be expanded into a much larger cinematic world.

A24 later partnered with Parsons to transform the online series into a feature film starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. Despite being Parsons’ first full-length movie, Backrooms exceeded expectations and established him as a filmmaker capable of carrying his distinctive visual language from YouTube to theaters.

The reported deal could include a potential Backrooms sequel, allowing Parsons to continue exploring the disturbing universe that launched his career. While no follow-up has been formally announced as part of the agreement, A24 is believed to be interested in building on the success of the first film.

A first-look arrangement would not necessarily prevent Parsons from working elsewhere, but it would give A24 the first opportunity to consider projects developed during the three-year period. For the studio, securing the filmmaker would strengthen a partnership that has already produced one of its most commercially successful releases. For Parsons, the deal could provide greater financial support and creative freedom as he develops more ambitious productions.

A24 is not believed to be the only company interested in working with the young director. Warner Bros. and NBCUniversal have also reportedly explored opportunities to recruit Parsons following the success of Backrooms. That outside interest gives him considerable leverage as negotiations continue and reflects how quickly his position within the industry has changed.

Parsons’ rise also represents a broader shift in Hollywood, where studios are increasingly paying attention to filmmakers who have already built dedicated audiences online. Rather than following a traditional path through film school, short-film festivals and smaller studio assignments, Parsons developed his identity through digital platforms before being handed control of a major theatrical production.

His journey from creating visual effects independently to directing an A24 feature has become one of the entertainment industry’s most notable recent success stories. It also shows the growing value of original ideas that begin within internet communities and later connect with mainstream audiences.

Neither A24 nor Kane Parsons has formally confirmed that an agreement has been completed. However, the reported $65 million offer indicates that the studio sees him as an important part of its future and believes the success of Backrooms could extend beyond a single movie.
