“Twenty Something”: Kier Unleashes New Single

There is something wonderfully disarming about a song that admits it does not have everything figured out. On ‘Twenty Something’, Yorkshire singer-songwriter Kier turns the uncertainty of early adulthood into bright, melodic pop, finding humour and heart in that peculiar period when life is supposed to be taking shape but rarely feels as orderly as advertised. The result is an intimate and immediately accessible song that understands the emotional contradiction of your twenties. You can be excited about what comes next while quietly wondering if everyone else has somehow received a map that never arrived in your inbox.

Kier’s greatest strength is her storytelling. Rather than dressing growing pains in grand declarations, she approaches them conversationally, allowing the details and observations to carry the emotional weight. There is an appealing lack of pretence in the way she writes about comparison, uncertainty and those milestones that seem to arrive on everyone else’s timeline. ‘Twenty Something’ feels like a conversation with a friend who can make you laugh about the things that keep you awake at night. Its self-awareness keeps the song from becoming overly sentimental, while its pop instincts ensure that the reflection never becomes heavy.

Sonically, the single represents a clear evolution for Kier. Her earlier work was rooted in the UK country and Americana scene, but ‘Twenty Something’ moves confidently toward intimate singer-songwriter pop, retaining the warmth of her storytelling while opening the door to a brighter, more contemporary palette. The production gives the song enough polish to feel infectious without smoothing away its personality. Guitars, piano, bass, drums, synths and layered backing vocals create a rich but approachable arrangement, giving Kier plenty of space at the centre.

That balance is what makes the track work so well. ‘Twenty Something’ is thoughtful without becoming solemn and catchy without sacrificing substance. There are echoes of the conversational pop instincts associated with artists such as Maisie Peters and Olivia Dean, alongside the polished immediacy of contemporary pop songwriting, but Kier remains firmly herself. Her country and Americana background has not disappeared. Instead, it has become part of a broader musical vocabulary, one that allows her to move between rootsy storytelling and modern pop with increasing confidence.

As the second release from her forthcoming record, ‘Twenty Something’ feels like a particularly promising glimpse of where Kier is heading. After three years of independent growth, more than 80 live shows during 2025, festival appearances and support slots, she arrives at this next chapter with a sharpened sense of identity. The song understands that growing up rarely resembles the neat progression we are promised. Sometimes it is awkward, funny, frustrating and exhilarating all at once. Kier captures that beautifully, turning the uncertainty of being twenty something into something worth singing along to.
