There is something quietly impressive about an album made entirely by one musician, particularly when that musician is Grégory Privat. On “Darling”, the title track from his third solo album, the Martinique-born pianist takes complete control of the musical process, performing every instrument himself. The result is an intimate yet richly textured piece that brings together jazz, improvisation and the influence of his Creole roots.
Privat has spent more than fifteen years developing a sound that refuses to sit neatly within a single category. His classical training provides a strong foundation, while his self-taught approach to improvisation has allowed him to develop a more instinctive relationship with the piano and composition. Those possibilities become particularly vivid on “Dwèt Crazy”. Meaning “crazy fingers”, the track was designed to create the sensation of an entire band despite Privat performing alone. Using a loop station, he builds layers of piano, synthesiser, vocals and percussion, turning individual sounds into a constantly developing arrangement. The accompanying live session captures the playful side of the concept, with Privat describing the fast-moving piece as music created to bring excitement and happiness.
What makes “Darling” compelling is the balance between technical ability and emotional openness. Privat’s music can be intricate without feeling distant, and his willingness to experiment never loses sight of the joy at the heart of the performance. From the cultural influence of Martinique to the possibilities of modern looping technology, “Darling” brings together different sides of his musical identity in a way that feels natural, adventurous and distinctly his own.
