Sometimes evolution doesn’t require becoming more serious. On ‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’, V1V1D expands his world by doing something refreshingly uncomplicated: having fun.
Following the momentum of ‘Timeless’ and ‘Stuffin’, the rising hip-hop artist switches the emotional temperature on his latest single. The atmospheric foundations remain, but introspection takes a back seat to adrenaline, spontaneity and the uncomplicated thrill of living entirely in the moment.
For once, there really isn’t much reason to argue with the artist’s own press notes.
“This shit slaps,” V1V1D says.
He’s right about the intention, at least. ‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ isn’t particularly interested in demanding interpretation. High-energy production gives the track immediate momentum, while V1V1D approaches it with the kind of confident delivery that works precisely because it doesn’t sound as though he’s trying too hard to manufacture a moment.
That distinction becomes more interesting when placed beside his previous material. V1V1D has established himself through atmospheric rap and contemporary trap that frequently looks inward, using personal experience, identity and uncertainty as material. Here, figuring life out can wait.
There’s value in that change of perspective. Artists who find early success can quickly become trapped by whatever initially connected with audiences, particularly when a track begins travelling far beyond its original context. ‘Timeless’, for example, has generated enormous traction across short-form video, with audio featuring the song surpassing 300 million views across TikTok and Instagram.
The obvious response would be to keep searching for another version of the same thing.
‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ instead loosens the formula. It retains enough of V1V1D’s atmospheric sensibility to remain recognisable while allowing energy and immediacy to become the main event. The result suggests he doesn’t need melancholy to create atmosphere or introspection to give a track personality.
That matters for an artist still defining the boundaries of his sound. Versatility isn’t necessarily about jumping dramatically between genres; sometimes it’s simply proving the same musical identity can accommodate different emotional states.
Here, that state is carefree.
The track’s directness is therefore less a rejection of the more reflective side of V1V1D’s catalogue than a useful counterweight to it. Life isn’t experienced exclusively through periods of self-examination, and an artist documenting the process of figuring things out in real time should probably leave room for the nights when nobody particularly wants to figure anything out.
‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ finds V1V1D trading introspection for adrenaline without sacrificing the atmosphere that made his earlier work connect. Bold, infectious and deliberately uncomplicated, it demonstrates that widening your artistic world doesn’t always mean digging deeper. Sometimes it means turning everything up and enjoying where the night takes you.
