PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA — Ghais Guevara has never approached hip-hop from a single direction. His journey has taken him from major venues to punk rock dive bars and Marxist bookstores, reflecting an artist who has always embraced the contradictions surrounding his life and creative identity.
Raised in North Philadelphia, Ghais Guevara grew up around the realities of his environment while also being nurtured and educated through generational radical Black thought. Those contrasting influences continue to shape the way he writes, produces, and presents himself as an artist.
That creative perspective became especially visible through projects such as There Will Be No Super-Slave and Goyard Ibn Said. Both releases earned recognition from publications including Vice, NPR, and The Needle Drop, bringing wider attention to his unconventional approach to lyricism and production.
Much of what makes Ghais Guevara’s music distinctive is his ability to build the world around his own writing. As a one-man band with a hands-on approach to beat-making, he creates instrumentals that give his stream-of-consciousness delivery room to move in unexpected directions.
His latest EP, Cantos of Ghais, continues that approach while bringing his various fixations together into another unpredictable listening experience. The project explores ideas and observations through layered lyricism, encouraging listeners to look beyond its eccentric presentation and engage with what is being said.
The production is further energized by contributions from Playa Haze and 2Zenith, whose instrumentals complement the project’s experimental character. Their work helps create a musical backdrop where Ghais Guevara can move freely between different ideas, sounds, and perspectives.
The Goyard Ibn Said character remains part of the aesthetic surrounding his work, bringing together an intentionally absurd range of influences that can initially distract from the depth of his writing. Beneath that surface, however, Ghais Guevara continues to challenge listeners to pay attention to the details and unpack the meaning within his music.
With Cantos of Ghais, Ghais Guevara continues building a body of work that exists outside conventional expectations. His willingness to combine unconventional production, dense lyricism, and an unpredictable aesthetic has become central to his identity, giving listeners plenty to discover with each release.
