Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with the talented Kayshon, a 25-year-old R&B/Hip Hop artist hailing from the vibrant city of Austin, Texas. Kayshon‘s music serves as a personal narrative, delivering relatable lyrics with infectious hooks that paint vivid pictures of the highs and lows of his past relationships. Having grown up singing in his church and embracing the big stage fearlessly, Kayshon‘s musical journey took a brief hiatus before he returned to his passion.
With his debut EP, “Love Cycles,” released in 2021, Kayshon made a mark in the music scene, sharing stages with prominent acts such as Elhae, Monaleo, Kali, and Yung Joc. Now, on the verge of dropping his latest project, a 3-track EP titled “Kayshon & Friends,” scheduled for release on February 9th, Kayshon is here to share insights into his creative process and the inspiration behind this exciting new endeavor.
Q: Can you tell us what inspired your 3-track project “Kayshon & Friends”?
A: “I was inspired to create Kayshon & Friends because I felt like I’ve met a bunch of dope artists over the past few years and I thought they deserved to be highlighted for their talent. Really just wanted to create something fun and wanted to work with artists that I respected musically and personally.”
Q: How would you describe the overall theme and vibe of the EP in just a few words?
A: “The vibe for this 3-pack is a little mixed. I wanted each song on the EP to have a different energy so overall the theme is a mix of love, and good vibes.”
Q: With diverse production styles, which track from the project represents your favorite musical expression?
A: “The track from this project that represents my favorite musical expression would be “Put It Down”. I’m an R&B artist so I feel like that song is more of the lane of music that I’ll be making in the future. Not necessarily the same topic but more R&B style of songs.”
Q: What motivated you to explore this theme in your music?
A: “I’ve always been a fan of challenging myself to different styles of music, so that was really the main source of motivation. I feel like I picked beats that matched the energy of the featured artists on the project, so I had to make sure I could match and fit their sound as well as add my own Kayshon touch.”
Q: How does your commitment to quality and consistency shape the sound of “Kayshon & Friends”?
A: “I’m really big on making sure that everything on the track sounds cohesive and overall sounds good. I always make sure that I have separate sessions to mix and master the records and sometimes a song will change 2-3 times before I feel good with the final product.”
Q: Could you share a bit about your approach to blending hard-hitting beats, melodic tunes, and thought-provoking rap in your music?
A: “I’m a fan of all kinds of music, so naturally, I’m influenced by many sounds. Because of this, I try to make sure that the beat selection is unique in nature and something that isn’t too boring. I also look for pockets in the song that could be moments in songs for either myself or the featured artist.”
Q: Among the 3 tracks, is there one that holds a particularly personal story or meaning for you?
A: “Among the 3 songs, “Dance With Me” probably has the most personal story to it. Even though the song is upbeat, I really wanted to highlight the fact that people no longer go out to clubs and dance. I feel like Section culture has made going out less fun because everyone is just seated the entire time in their own cliques. The song is really about people going back to how it used to be and have fun on the dance floor.”
Q: How do you believe your music stands out within the music scene?
A: “I feel like my music is unique in the fact that I’m not trying to sound like every other artist. I also think because I make R&B music that there’s not that many people who do it which automatically makes your music stand out.”
Q: Were there any specific challenges you faced during the creation of “Kayshon & Friends,” and how did you tackle them?
A: “The only challenges I faced during the creation of Kayshon & Friends was getting artists’ verses in. Originally, this was supposed to be a 4-song tape, but we ran into issues with artists being away and conflicting schedules.”
Q: What do you hope listeners take away or feel when they experience “Kayshon & Friends”?
A: “I hope the listeners of Kayshon & Friends take away the feeling of bliss and truly enjoy the songs that are on the 3 pack. My hope is after the listeners experience the EP, they’ll want to check out more of my music as well as the featured artists.”
