Carlotta Schmidt Turns “Let Me Be Me” Into a Collective Statement of Acceptance and Unity

New Jersey-based singer-songwriter Carlotta Schmidt releases an uplifting official music video for ‘Let Me Be Me’ from her latest album ‘Overthinker’.Originally written as a personal plea, it ended up becoming an anthem. The video was directed, produced and edited by Schmidt herself, featuring 67 participants, including Schmidt, members of her band the Bold, guitarist Jon Herington, and volunteers, staff, and clients from New Jersey LGBTQ+ nonprofits and community care.

What makes the video powerful is not only its message, but also the number of people involved. Participants from across the United States and as far as Zambia filmed their own clips using mobile phones, which Schmidt later assembled into the final piece. The result is a celebration of individuality, acceptance, and community, reinforcing the song’s core message that love is love and everyone deserves the opportunity to experience it.

Another factor that makes the video standout is its simplicity. Rather than relying on large-scale production or elaborate visuals, each individual becomes the focal point. The message that’s being spread is never overshadowed by theatrics, which is one of the reasons video works so well. The decision to use self-recorded footage adds a sense of authenticity and personal connection, while bringing together a diverse group of people through a shared expression of love and acceptance.

The inclusion of not only members of the LGBTQ+ community, but also allies and supporting organisations, further strengthens the message by creating a sense of solidarity, support and visibility. Their presence serves as a way of saying we stand with you and makes the video feel more than a visual to accompany a song but a statement of unity.

Overall, Carlotta Schmidt has managed to create a music video that is simple yet effective,  personal yet resonant for all who have felt unseen or unaccepted, making them feel a part of something bigger and more celebratory.
