Some songs are about changing the world, while others are about making sure one person does not have to face it alone. Wayne Banks’ “Cold River” belongs firmly in the second category. The second single from the Nottingham singer-songwriter’s forthcoming debut album is a gentle but emotionally resonant acoustic rock track about standing beside someone during a difficult period, without pretending that every problem can be fixed.
The song has an appropriately organic beginning. A piece of acoustic guitar from longtime collaborator James Cole immediately sparked a melody and the first lines for Banks, who then built the rest of the lyrics around that initial idea. There is a sense of natural discovery in the track, with the guitar providing a simple foundation for Banks’ vocal and allowing the songwriting to remain at the forefront.
“Cold River” takes its title from the metaphor at the centre of the song. The river represents struggle, hardship and the periods in life when moving forward can feel difficult. Rather than positioning the narrator as a saviour, Banks offers something more realistic and arguably more human. Sometimes all you can do is stay close, keep walking and remind someone that they are not alone. It is a thoughtful idea that gives the song an emotional depth beyond its understated arrangement.
The release also marks another step in Banks’ transition from accomplished bassist and session musician to solo artist. His career has included work with internationally recognised acts such as Robin Gibb and Saxon, as well as extensive experience as a songwriter and musical director. “Cold River” shows a different side of that musical history, placing his own songwriting and voice at the centre. With “Ex Libris Wayne Banks” scheduled for November, the track suggests a debut album shaped as much by honesty and lived experience as by Banks’ considerable musical pedigree.
