“Take It or Leave It”: Alysha Is Back With An Edgier Sound

Alysha is back with “Take It or Leave It,” a track that tries very hard to be dark and edgy. It is a predictable blend of goth-lite synths and electronic beats that sounds more like a mood board than a fully realized song. The “provocative” use of the number 666 feels less like genuine artistic expression and more like a transparent gimmick to get attention. It is a classic case of using controversy to cover for a lack of a compelling hook.

The entire concept hinges on the supposedly shocking idea of a goth song about God. Alysha claims she wanted to make a Christian song that alternative people could enjoy. That is a fine goal, but the result feels like a calculated marketing strategy rather than a sincere exploration of faith. Instead of breaking new ground, it just dresses up a simple message in a costume of dark aesthetics to seem more interesting than it is.

Let’s look at the backstory. Another artist with a diverse background and a childhood filled with music, who started releasing tracks in her teens. It is a familiar narrative. The rebrand in 2023, the pivot to a more “mature” sound, it all follows a well-trodden path to generate industry buzz. Her success with Instagram Reels and features in fashion magazines like Vogue suggests her image is just as, if not more, important than the music itself.

While her upcoming stadium tour with LANY is certainly impressive, it feels like a testament to her team’s industry connections rather than the undeniable strength of this single. “Take It or Leave It” is not the bold artistic statement it claims to be. It is a safe, focus-grouped attempt at being different, and ultimately, it leaves me feeling cold.
