Hogwarts Finds Its Most Charming Fraud as Nicholas Hoult Joins ‘Harry Potter’

Nicholas Hoult is finally heading to Hogwarts, but he will not be arriving as the Boy Who Lived. The 36-year-old British actor has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s ambitious Harry Potter television series. His addition gives the adaptation another major name while placing a performer celebrated for balancing comedy, arrogance and menace into one of the story’s most entertaining roles.

According to Entertainment Weekly, HBO confirmed that Hoult will appear when the series adapts Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Lockhart enters Hogwarts as its new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor and arrives with an impressive collection of bestselling books, celebrity admirers and stories about his supposed heroic adventures. Behind the dazzling smile and carefully maintained public image, however, the professor is far less capable than he wants the wizarding world to believe.

Kenneth Branagh memorably portrayed Lockhart in the 2002 movie adaptation, delivering a performance filled with theatrical confidence and comic vanity. Hoult will now have the opportunity to create a distinct version of the character within HBO’s longer television format, which could provide more room for Lockhart’s classroom failures, elaborate publicity stunts and increasingly suspicious behavior. The role appears especially suited to Hoult’s ability to make deeply flawed characters amusing, unpredictable and strangely watchable.

The casting also brings Hoult’s history with the franchise full circle nearly 25 years after he auditioned to play Harry Potter in the original movies. The actor reportedly received multiple callbacks before Daniel Radcliffe ultimately secured the role, and Hoult was later invited to audition for Draco Malfoy as well. After joking in 2024 that he might still be able to pass for an 11-year-old Harry with glasses and a scar, he has now officially found his place in the Wizarding World.

Hoult enters the series after portraying Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman, adding another globally recognized franchise to an already varied career. His credits include Mad Max: Fury Road, the X-Men films, Nosferatu, The Menu, Warm Bodies and Hulu’s acclaimed historical comedy The Great. His performance as the vain and volatile Emperor Peter III in The Great demonstrated precisely the mix of charm, absurdity and self-importance that could make his interpretation of Lockhart particularly memorable.

HBO’s adaptation stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The ensemble also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy. Season 2 was officially approved in May 2026 and is currently expected to arrive in late 2027, following the debut season’s Christmas 2026 premiere.

The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, while Succession filmmaker Mark Mylod serves as a director and executive producer. HBO intends to adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels across separate seasons, allowing characters and storylines to receive more attention than the original films could accommodate. With Hoult now preparing to bring Lockhart’s enormous ego and questionable heroics back to Hogwarts, Season 2 has gained one of its most intriguing pieces of casting yet.
