SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Emerging recording artist DJh12k, originally from Chicago, Illinois, is carving out his own lane in music after relocating to Saint Paul, Minnesota, to pursue his career full time. Known for blending hip-hop, rock, R&B and emo influences into what he calls “Afro-hip-hop,” DJh12k aims to create feel-good, dance-driven music that stands apart from traditional street narratives.
“I make good vibe music for the ladies,” DJh12k said. “I want them to know they’re special. Not all music has to be gang-related. There are different styles — that 2000 vibe style music. My sound is different. It’s not your ordinary type of music.”
DJh12k describes his music as energetic and emotionally layered — songs that make listeners want to dance, sing loudly and fully embrace the moment. His style merges multiple genres into one cohesive identity, offering what he believes is a refreshing alternative within today’s rap landscape.
Early Momentum and Social Media Growth
DJh12k first gained attention at 15 years old after releasing his debut single on SoundCloud. The track marked his introduction to audiences and positioned him as a young artist to watch.
At 19, he released “I Can’t Leave Him Alone Remix” on TikTok, where it gained significant traction — earning more than 35,000 views within two days and over 3,500 likes. The momentum helped solidify his growing presence on social media, where he has since surpassed 8,000 followers on TikTok in just two years.
Turning Pain Into Purpose
A defining moment in DJh12k’s life came at age 8 with the loss of his father, whom he describes as his best friend. That loss became the catalyst for his musical journey.
“Losing my father really took a hard dive on me,” he said. “I turned my pain into music.”
Throughout his career, he has faced rejection from industry professionals — unanswered messages, declined opportunities and critical feedback. Rather than stepping away, DJh12k used those experiences as motivation.
“The biggest challenge was hearing ‘no’ and not getting responses,” he said. “Some people said I sound like a kid or I’m just not it. But I kept dropping more songs and trusting the process. Seeing progress gave me faith not to give up.”
Looking Ahead: ‘Breaking the Net’
DJh12k is currently promoting his upcoming release, “I Can’t Leave Him Alone Remix,” while preparing a six-track project titled “Breaking the Net.” The project is slated for release in July 2026, with final details still being finalized. The EP will primarily feature DJh12k, with one collaboration from his sibling.
In the coming years, DJh12k envisions becoming a recognized artist who helps other independent musicians navigate the same obstacles he faced. He also hopes to meet and collaborate with artists he admires, including Rod Wave and BabyChiefDoIt.
“I see myself becoming a famous artist and giving back to my community,” he said. “Helping other independent artists like me reach where I’m going.”
With a unique genre-blending approach and a commitment to turning personal hardship into uplifting music, DJh12k continues building his brand and expanding his reach beyond Chicago roots.
