Three-time Grammy-nominated artist and The Pharcyde founding member Bootie Brown returns with his latest solo single, ‘2 Get 2 U’, a smooth, playful hip-hop release arriving as the alternative rap pioneer prepares to join Gorillaz for the US leg of their tour.
Best known for helping shape alternative hip-hop through The Pharcyde classics including ‘Passin’ Me By’ and ‘Drop’, Brown has spent decades building a career defined by individuality, humour and creative experimentation. His collaborations with Gorillaz, including ‘Dirty Harry’ and ‘New Gold’, have further introduced his distinctive delivery to audiences across generations.
On ‘2 Get 2 U’, Brown brings that unmistakable personality into a relaxed, character-driven track exploring attraction, pursuit and the sometimes elaborate lengths people will go to capture someone’s attention.
“What ‘2 Get 2 U’ means to me is the various ways men will try to seduce a woman,” Brown explains.
The single also highlights Brown’s ongoing commitment to discovering and supporting emerging producers. Its origins can be traced to OrganicBeat Session, his show on PharcydeTV dedicated to showcasing beatmakers and bringing fresh creative talent into the spotlight.
It was through the programme that Brown discovered producer Les Lockheart, whose instrumental immediately caught his attention.
“I host a show called OrganicBeat Session on PharcydeTV, and Les Lockheart is one of many talented beatmakers who are showcased on the stream,” Brown explains. “I heard this track and knew I could create something special with it. I have been working on it for some time now, and it’s ready for me to share with the people.”
The resulting collaboration combines Lockheart’s production with Brown’s effortless delivery and conversational storytelling, capturing the playful approach that has remained central to his music since The Pharcyde’s early days.
The release comes during another busy chapter for the artist, who is currently touring with Gorillaz ahead of their upcoming US dates. Brown’s longstanding relationship with the group has produced some of his most recognisable collaborations, demonstrating his ability to move between alternative hip-hop and more experimental musical worlds.
Beyond his solo work and touring commitments, Brown continues to develop projects across music, fashion and media. Alongside PharcydeTV, he is also a co-owner of Store No 242, while his wider collaborative catalogue includes Africa Express track ‘Otim Hop’ and a recent appearance alongside Nubiyan Twist on ‘Red Herring’.
Born Romye Robinson, Brown first emerged as part of The Pharcyde, whose unconventional approach to hip-hop helped establish the group as one of the genre’s most influential alternative acts.
Decades later, that appetite for experimentation remains central to his work. With ‘2 Get 2 U’, Brown connects his unmistakable old-school personality with a new generation of producers, delivering a laid-back addition to his solo catalogue while continuing to expand his musical legacy.
