Madison County’s Damaged: Two Generations. Twelve Songs. A Bold New Chapter

Madison County knows how to command a stage. With Damaged, the seven-piece country show band from Madison, Wisconsin, gives audiences twelve original reasons to listen closer. Their eighth original release brings the songwriting of father and son Mike and Keagen Zibell and keyboardist Dan Mahieu to the forefront, pairing the band’s powerhouse vocals and unmistakable family harmonies with a sound that stretches across traditional country, pop, bluesy rock, and Americana. The result is an album that builds on Madison County’s roots while opening the door to new possibilities.

At the heart of that progression is Keagen Zibell. As lead writer on seven of the album’s twelve tracks, he takes a commanding creative role, helping shape both the record and the band’s next chapter. His growing presence as a songwriter adds another dimension to the father-son connection that has long helped define Madison County: a bond heard in their harmonies and now expressed through an expanding body of original work.

Building on their 2024 EP, Three Sheets to the Wind, Damaged gives the band more room to explore. Songs shift in style and intensity, allowing the three writers’ individual voices to emerge while remaining grounded in the band’s shared musical identity. Engineer and producer Jake Johnson of Paradyme Productions helped bring those ideas into focus, guiding the recording and production.

That adventurous spirit comes through in Mahieu’s “Sun Don’t Set on the Cool.” Driven by a 1970s-inspired blues-rock sound, the track brings grit and swagger to the album, revealing another side of a band whose musical reach extends well beyond its country foundation.

For longtime fans, that range reflects the energy Madison County brings to the stage throughout the year. Their engaging performances and outstanding musicianship have helped earn them more than 60 regional awards. Their previous project, Three Sheets to the Wind, and its standout track, “That Waylon Sound,” earned WAMI Country Album of the Year and Country Song of the Year honors—setting a formidable standard for the follow-up.

With Damaged, Madison County meets that moment. It is a record shaped by three songwriters, strengthened by two generations, and brought to life by a band still finding fresh ways to make its voice heard.

With this father and son duo sharing the story through song, and Keagen taking an increasingly central role in the writing, Madison County is showing that the strongest part of their journey may still be unfolding.
