Hayden Panettiere, the actress who became a familiar face to millions through Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, has died at the age of 36 as authorities continue looking into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, with her family confirming the news through her representative. Her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, said the family was sharing the news with “profound sadness,” describing his daughter as an incredible light who brought love and joy to the people around her and to audiences who watched her throughout her career. The family has asked for privacy while processing the loss.
At this stage, a cause of death has not been disclosed. Panettiere’s publicist, Kasey Kitchen, told NBC News that her death was being investigated, according to Reuters. Authorities have not publicly announced what caused her death, and major reports have not identified a location or released additional circumstances that would explain what happened.
TMZ has reported that law enforcement officers responded to an incident involving Panettiere on Sunday and that an investigation remains open. The outlet also cited an unnamed source close to the actress who said she had been complaining about back pain during the past year. There is currently no confirmed connection between that reported back pain and her death, and no official medical finding has been released linking the two.
Only weeks before her death, Panettiere had remained visible publicly and on social media. Her final Instagram post came on July 27, when she shared a smiling photo alongside photographer Randall Slavin with the caption, “Good times and good friends.” Slavin later paid tribute following news of her death. Panettiere had also spent recent months promoting her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which was released in May and reached No. 4 on The New York Times bestseller list.
Panettiere had been working in entertainment for nearly her entire life, beginning with commercials as a baby before moving into television and film. Her breakthrough with a wider audience came as Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes, where she played the seemingly indestructible cheerleader at the center of the superhero drama. She later took on one of the defining roles of her career as Juliette Barnes in Nashville, earning two Golden Globe nominations for her performance as the complicated country music star.
Her film work included Remember the Titans, Ice Princess, Bring It On: All or Nothing and the Scream franchise. Panettiere first played Kirby Reed in Scream 4 before returning to the character more than a decade later in Scream VI. Her most recent screen project was the 2026 psychological thriller Sleepwalker, continuing a return to acting after she had previously stepped away from Hollywood for several years.
Away from the screen, Panettiere had spoken openly about some of the most difficult periods of her life. In interviews and her memoir, she discussed postpartum depression, addiction, the pressures of becoming famous at a young age and her path toward recovery. She also endured the death of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at age 28. Her willingness to discuss those experiences became a major part of the more personal chapter of her public life in recent years.
Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter Kaya, whom she shared with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, as well as her parents. As tributes continue to emerge from people who knew and worked with her, questions surrounding her death remain unanswered. For now, authorities have not announced a cause, and reports that mention circumstances preceding her death should not be treated as an explanation until investigators or her family provide further information.
