Kehlani says medication, exercise, yoga, time outdoors and prayer have become non-negotiable parts of the routine she relies on to protect her mental health.
Kehlani is opening up about the structure she says helps keep her grounded while managing her mental health. In a new Billboard cover story published Thursday, August 20, the 31-year-old singer explained that maintaining a consistent wellness routine has become essential while living with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.
“I take medicine. I have to go to the gym; it’s not an option,” Kehlani told the publication. She also described yoga, walks, time in nature and prayer as important parts of her routine, framing those habits as practical ways of protecting her well-being rather than optional extras when her schedule gets demanding.
Kehlani said the music industry can make that consistency difficult, pointing to a cycle of late-night studio sessions, sleeping through daylight and missing regular meals. For her, building a routine around wellness is a way to push back against the idea that artists have to sacrifice basic care in order to keep working at an intense pace.

The Grammy winner also widened the conversation beyond her own habits, arguing that the industry needs to take artists’ wellness as seriously as it takes promoting their music. Her comments underline a broader point about sustainability, with Kehlani emphasizing that creative work is harder to maintain when the person making it is not being supported.
Kehlani revealed her bipolar disorder and BPD diagnoses in April 2025 and has continued speaking publicly about what she has learned since then. In an April 2026 interview with VIBE, she said medication, different forms of therapy including somatic healing, and a growing “tool belt of awareness” had helped her better recognize symptoms, triggers and the kind of environment she needs.
The conversation arrives during a major year for Kehlani, who won her first two Grammy Awards for “Folded” and released her self-titled fifth studio album in April. As her career continues at a high level, her latest comments make clear that protecting her health now sits alongside the music itself as a priority she is unwilling to compromise.
