PATERSON, N.J. — Songwriter, artist and poet Shantee — born Ashante Johnson — is using her life experiences to craft music rooted in resilience, healing and authenticity. Raised in Paterson, New Jersey, Shantee’s journey into music began long before she stepped into a recording booth.
“People should read about me because I have a true passion for music,” she said. “I’ve been in performing arts since I knew how to walk and before I knew how to talk.”
Finding Strength Through Sound
Shantee lives with severe hearing loss in both ears, but instead of limiting her, the experience shaped her artistry.
“I couldn’t hear well, but I felt vibrations of music and melodies through my body,” she said. “That’s why I love to write poetry — I connected with rhythm as a way to express, communicate and connect.”
What began as poetry eventually evolved into songwriting and performing. Despite speech delays early in life, Shantee now makes a living using her voice across multiple creative platforms.
“I don’t just rhyme. I tell stories and make you think about your own life experiences,” she said. “I can help you heal, have a good time, laugh or just think and relax. I bring every feeling you need.”
Career Highlights and Achievements
Shantee released her first EP, Lovers Coaster, in 2020, featuring standout artists including Leah Jenea and P-Dice, a member of Remy Boyz. The project gained local traction during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her creative work has extended beyond music. She performed her song “Flowers to My Boys” on Hot 97’s Who’s Next showcase and has also worked in political spaces, including roles supporting Bill Pascrell and participating in an anti–gun violence initiative for Phil Murphy.
Shantee is also a graduate of Rutgers University, where she excelled academically despite challenges related to hearing impairment.
Overcoming Challenges in Music and Life
Recording music hasn’t always been easy. Wearing hearing aids in both ears can make studio sessions difficult, especially when working with headphones and tuning vocals.
“But like Ludwig van Beethoven, I find a way to still create something beautiful,” she said.
New Album and Creative Vision
Shantee’s most recent release, Post Partner Depression, dropped in February 2026. The 11-track project features an intro, interlude and outro that explore her personal journey through a difficult relationship that evolved into something stronger. Her husband, P-Dice, appears on two tracks, with “Audemars” and “Lottery” emerging as fan favorites.
Looking ahead, Shantee sees her future in songwriting for major artists, winning top industry awards, finishing a feature-length screenplay and expanding her creative impact beyond music.
“My talent goes beyond music,” she said. “Music, film, poetry and books — I can create it all with the help of God.”
