Tracee Ellis Ross is revisiting the bizarre pregnancy rumor that spread online this summer, calling the false speculation “nuts” and questioning how it gained traction.
Tracee Ellis Ross has addressed the viral pregnancy rumor that falsely claimed she was expecting a child, this time during a new conversation on What Now? with Trevor Noah. Reflecting on the fabricated post that circulated in June, Ross joked, “Was it a slow news day?” before describing how social media users quickly began picking apart the supposed evidence.
“My favorite thing was, whoever was holding the pregnancy test, everyone underneath [the post] was like, ‘Those aren’t Tracy’s fingers. Those are her nails. That’s not her,’” Ross said, according to Complex. She added, “That shit was nuts. I thought that was crazy. I was like, ‘What are you guys talking about?’”
The rumor centered on an image that appeared to show Ross holding a positive pregnancy test, despite no verified announcement from the actress. Ross told Trevor Noah that even the visual did not make sense to people familiar with her appearance, joking that a photo showing her with “a bloated tummy” at least might have given the speculation some basis.
Noah used the episode to discuss the broader incentives behind misleading aggregation and clickbait on social media, suggesting that false claims can still generate attention and revenue even when they are quickly debunked. The exchange came during the August 13 episode of What Now? with Trevor Noah, where Ross also spoke about independence, relationships, her career and the pressure women face to be “chosen.”
Ross had already shut down the pregnancy talk during a June appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She explained that she initially thought congratulatory messages she received were connected to her Broadway role in Every Brilliant Thing, only to discover that people online believed she was pregnant. “Which is hilarious. I am not pregnant,” she said at the time.
The actress has continued speaking candidly about how public narratives can collide with her private life, particularly when it comes to expectations around relationships and motherhood. Her latest comments make clear that the pregnancy claim was never more than an internet rumor, while also underscoring how quickly fabricated celebrity content can spread before the subject has a chance to respond.
