MASY. Talks Creative Freedom, Introspection, and His Rising Global Impact

Atlanta’s own Mason “MASY.” Calhoun is steadily emerging as one of the most distinctive voices in experimental R&B, blending soulful vulnerability with a forward-thinking approach to production that feels both intimate and refreshing. With his breakout single “hypnotized” amassing millions of streams, MASY. has already demonstrated a rare ability to connect with listeners across the world, turning deeply personal reflections into universally relatable moments. As a singer, songwriter, and producer, he approaches music as a form of self-exploration, crafting records that feel honest, immersive, and emotionally layered. His work doesn’t just aim to entertain, it creates space for listeners to reflect, feel seen, and find connection through sound. In this interview, MASY. dives into the experiences that shaped his perspective, the creative instincts that guide his process, and the philosophy behind the music that continues to define his growing presence.

Q. You’ve described your music as rooted in emotional honesty. What personal experiences have most shaped your ability to express vulnerability through your sound?

A: One key piece to understanding my approach is recognizing that I’ve spent a good amount of time on my own, sitting with my thoughts. I’m the youngest and my mother’s only son, I went to boarding school, and I spent three years out of school while most of my peers were active students. This naturally gave me a lot of time to go inward. Introspection can uncover the great, the good, the bad, and the ugly within a person, and I’m willing to express that full bandwidth honestly through my music.

Q. Growing up in a separated household, how did that environment influence your creativity and the themes you explore in your music today?

A: Growing up as I did, you get a vivid picture of the traits that can contribute to an unhealthy relationship. The other side of that coin, though, sheds light onto what a healthy relationship requires, and these are principles I pour into everything I make. In my discography, there’s a range of light and dark that I intend to let portray these complexities. Love isn’t solely about the highlights. Sometimes love moves into extremes of yearning for something needed or swells into ecstasy.

Q. Your breakout single “hypnotized” reached millions of streams. At what moment did you realize that record was connecting on a larger scale?

A: During the time of the song’s initial rise in traction is when I started receiving DMs and messages from new listeners describing moments my music provided the soundtrack for. It’s a surreal experience knowing how far our ripples in time stretch. People from here in America to people from Chile, South Africa, France, etc. I’m forever humbled by that truth that anyone can make a difference in someone’s life.

Q. You blend soulful elements with forward-thinking production. How do you approach balancing classic influences with modern experimentation?

A: I usually don’t create with reference tracks — at most, I’ll refer to the key of a song I like to have a starting place and leave myself room to play. I think that keeps me fresh as a producer. A DAW for me is no different than how someone like David Choe approaches a canvas. It’s less of “today I’m gonna make an R&B song” and more viewing sound kits and plugins as a palette, purely serving as a vehicle for however I feel in an instance. I tend to let the sound selection steer, and naturally my influences find their way into the output.

Q. You originally pursued acting at Howard University before fully committing to music. What led to that turning point in 2022?

A: Actually, I didn’t end up pursuing acting at Howard. I applied to be an acting major; though I wasn’t admitted, I still elected to go to Howard. This left me as an undeclared student for my first semester, eventually choosing to be a Film major my second term. This and a few other factors contributed to me leaving school, one of them being my desire to devote my time towards maximizing my creative output. Don’t need a degree to do that.

Q. As both a singer-songwriter and producer, how does being involved in every stage of creation impact the final product?

A: I think the result you get is like a fingerprint. Engineering is a part of my production. I enjoy being able to construct how the song hits my ear just as much as writing heartfelt lyrics. I wanna build a sonic environment that’s distinct from anything else I’ve heard, just as each of us are 1 of 1.

Q. You’ve mentioned wanting to create a space where listeners feel understood and uplifted. What kind of emotional response do you hope people walk away with after hearing your music?

A: An artist is a mirror. The truth is it’s hard to make something from a genuine place if I’m concerning myself with how someone else may receive it. Only you can judge what you see in the mirror, as Weezy F put it. If I’m able to provide space for you to see a piece of yourself in what I’ve created, then I’ve done my job. The beauty of music to me is that I can express how I feel and build something so intrinsically personal, yet that expression can resonate deeply with someone I may never meet in a place I may never go.

Q. Beyond music, you have interests in design, storytelling, and even film and television. How do you see these creative outlets connecting with your artistry moving forward?

A: Ideally, I can adapt a couple of my projects into short films. Mostly, though, my interest in film/acting is separate from music. I would love to be on SNL. Acting has always been something I want to see through, so look out for me in the next Best Picture winner.

Q. With your growing audience and momentum, what does the next phase of MASY. look like, both musically and creatively?

A: As of now, I’m working on an EP titled “free tha light”. There will be a single from it coming out this April. Beyond that, you will just have to keep in tune to find what I’m up to next. I’m here playing life by ear.

As his momentum continues to build, MASY. is positioning himself as a truly compelling force within modern R&B, one who values authenticity just as much as sonic innovation. His dedication to expressing the full spectrum of human emotion, from introspection to connection, sets a strong foundation for a lasting career rooted in purpose and individuality. With a growing global fanbase and an expanding creative vision, he remains focused on evolving both musically and artistically without compromising what makes his sound unique. Looking ahead to his upcoming EP “free tha light” and new releases on the horizon, it’s clear that MASY. is only beginning to tap into his full potential.
