Interview with TVM Killa
Urban$ound team got to sit down with TVM to learn more about “P.S. The Album is Done” and his journey.
Urban$ound Team: Your journey from a challenging childhood to signing with Iswimwithsharks Inc. and Symphonic Distribution is inspiring. How did your early life experiences prepare you for the challenges and successes of the music industry?
TVM Killa: My childhood is a reminder that I don’t fit in. The world rejects the way I think and before music it wasn’t socially acceptable. I’m proud to say I’ve never changed and stayed true to who I am as a person. I made the FAM brand to create a family that truly knows me and accepts me for who I am. And thanks to Iswimwithsharks Inc. & Symphonic Distribution I have the platform to extend that love from our family even further.
Urban$ound Team: Signing with Iswimwithsharks Inc. and Symphonic Distribution must have been a significant milestone. Can you share the story behind how this partnership came about and what it means for your career moving forward?
TVM Killa: I actually performed in front of Iswimwithsharks at Crown Station in Charlotte, NC a year or two ago before signing with them. That was my first time getting to know their position in the music industry. But I was honestly on such a grind for my release “Reckless in the Winter” last year that I did everything imaginable to ensure its success. Of course once it dropped I created the new peak of my career and just like the values that I keep with my own brand, I share the same with Iswimwithsharks Inc. & Symphonic. We keep the family close over here and the family just got bigger. They were a great fit and I fight for their success as much as mine.
Urban$ound Team: You achieved exceptional sales success at Megacorp Logistics before pursuing music full-time. How did your corporate experience influence your approach to building your music career, especially in terms of strategy and professionalism?
TVM Killa: Megacorp changed every aspect of my life. It was my introduction into a corporate realm. I had to adapt to having a job you never clock out of and transitioning that work ethic and professionalism into my life and music career is what made it successful. I got published on Future Millionaires for a reason.
Urban$ound Team: Your single ‘Drink Smoke’ surpassed a million streams and paved the way for your major label signing. What do you think resonated most with your audience about that track, and how did its success impact your creative process?
TVM Killa: I just recently got a message actually from a fan the other day that sent the screenshot of her listening to it before going to meet her baby daddy to see her kids in preparation for all the smoke. But Drink Smoke is our pre-game song for life. You can’t name another turn up song that gets you hyped to focus on your goals and shifts the mindset to winning while having fun. But like on my end. I also dropped the merch collection with it “Summer Utilities” and our camp ate that shit up since before it even dropped. Seeing everyone in the Drink Smoke Jerseys and singing along to it before it even dropped was like a key sign to me that this was one of dem ones. Since then I still rely heavily on the FAM’s feedback. I know if I can get them rocking with it, that we’ve got a special one on our hands. But it’s also a testament to how we live this life. We drink, We Smoke, but still never stray from the goal. So that honesty of narrating what we’re living has always been my winning recipe and its success only reminds me to keep staying true to who I am and keep the family close.
Urban$ound Team: How has the support of your fans and the TVMFAM community shaped your journey from an independent artist to signing a major label distribution deal? What role do they play in your artistic vision and career decisions?
TVM Killa: I’m trying to figure that out now. I’m at a point now where there’s hundreds of messages a week from people sending the most positive feedback, telling me and showing me how my music helps them, and it’s inspiring. From a person who used to get a lot of hate for his existence, to wake up to love from so many is a newfound platform of life. But it’s a catch 22. Cuz now I spend most of my time communicating with my community. It makes content easier and creates the space that anyone new can see exactly where our conversations leave off. But it’s hard for me to there and here at the same time. Out in the world and then back home. I’m now trying to find the balance and have to limit the time I spend communicating with them in order to have time to work and secure our future. So now there’s a million unread messages that I can’t wait to get to. Keep sending them. Y’all keep me alive.
Urban$ound Team: Congratulations on the release of ‘P.S. The Album is Done’! Can you take us through the creative process behind this project and what inspired its title and themes?
TVM Killa: The original song was mine & Swervin’s 1st song together. I dropped it before dropping my 1st album “PREACH”. I plan on dropping the Deluxe album soon and wanted to pay homage to the structure of the 1st release. So this take is a reminder that we can do it better and an excuse to bring the rest of the family in. At this point it’s like an inside joke. I keep saying the album is done which it has been for years now. I got like 3 albums that I could drop whenever I feel like. But I live on this principal that timeless music should never be rushed. And I think artists really have to ask themselves. What is their art worth. I put most of my time and effort into the planning, strategies, events, and collections. We live in a world where the reveal is more important than the art nowadays so I hang on to my assets until they are ready to do numbers in the ever-growing market.
Urban$ound Team: You collaborated with Landon McClellan & Cam Dukez on the remix of ‘P.S. The Album is Done’. What was it like working with them, and how did their contributions enhance the album’s overall narrative?
TVM Killa: Tobey with Big Sean, Babytron & Eminem just dropped. & we gave it a listen to. We all agreed that our remix is what we were hoping that song would’ve been. What makes that song work so perfectly is how much we know each other. This is born from our camp so the way it blends is exceptional. Landon & Cam are two legendary artists that over the years you could consider my sparring partners. We pull a lot from each other’s styles and push each other towards greatness every day. So when tasked for them to do a remix on P.S. the Album is Done, there is no one better suited for the job. They do an incredible job of matching the talent. Dirty’s entire verse is a Concrete Poem that Acronyms FAM. Cam does a direct nod to my cadence and lyrics at the end of his verse with the Maison Margiela line and that’s just love between us. Like if the world never understood what was happening I did. And that’s my love language. That shit means the world to me. But having each of them put their own personality to the track, rework the hook to turn into their home. To me it feels like this was made for them. Its a testament to the bond we have as a family and I’m proud to see the natural synergy our artists on the label have.
Urban$ound Team: The album seems to carry personal significance, reflecting milestones and challenges in your life. Could you share some of the stories or experiences that influenced the tracks on this album?
TVM Killa: There was a level of honesty and personalness if that’s a word. To the Preach Album that coined my style, my sound, my context. And I wanted to double down on my own vulnerableness. I wanted to write a couple more pages of the same diary. We also had sooo many tracks from SpeedontheTrack that we had exclusives too. But in my opinion, the album is the TVM Killa the world has yet to meet. They have yet to have the tracks that made me. The tracks that really solidified me. There’s some heavy staples on there. And the reason I’m withholding a lot of new music is because. I don’t want to just throw people onto the person I am today. To really understand who is TVM Killa, and then understand where I went afterwards you HAVE to hear this album. It’s the missing link to a new era of music.
Urban$ound Team: How do you feel ‘P.S. The Album is Done’ represents your growth and evolution as an artist since your earlier releases? Are there specific elements or messages you aimed to convey through this project?
TVM Killa: The brand morals are so present in my verse. You hear the confidence in every line. You hear the unapologetic self-expression. You hear the family. It gives people what evolution looks like for someone who doesn’t sell their soul. I’m happy to be in a place where I can calmly state, “ My music’s better. My d*ck is bigger. My b*tches badder. It shows.” And it be true. I love who I am. I love what I’m becoming. MY success isn’t based off of charts. MY success is based off the lives that I touch every day and being able to live in the world of music daily. I know what I have to offer. I know the skill I have. I know my work ethic to make it win, I’m ready for war. I’m not gonna be Draked by Kendrick. He could never.
Urban$ound Team: Looking ahead, what do you hope listeners take away from ‘P.S. The Album is Done’? How does this project set the stage for your future endeavors in music?
TVM Killa: I hope this reminds you that the album is on the way. I will be working tirelessly to give you the album you deserved so long ago. When the album drops we are back. My chains are free. I can release more. My chains to myself will be free. The family is still here. Still winning. Still killing. Still FAM. You know what to expect.
