For Janey Eduardo Leudo Mosquera, better known as “The Joker,” the path to success in Colombia’s urban music scene has been anything but conventional. Born in Cali on December 22, 1989, his journey began with the duo Wario & El Bird in 2010, where his talent quickly earned recognition under the Trafficc Entertainment label. When the duo disbanded in 2012, The Joker didn’t let the setback stop him. Instead, he embraced his solo career, fueled by resilience and an unyielding commitment to his craft.
The Origin Story
Taking inspiration from his favorite comic book villain, The Joker chose a name that embodies unpredictability, wit, and depth. “My laughter is unique, my style is unique, and what I say is completely real,” he asserts, summing up the essence of his brand. These qualities set him apart in the evolving landscape of trap music, where authenticity often determines longevity.
As a pioneer of trap music in Colombia, his breakout hit Rebeldía paved the way for a genre that was virtually unheard of in his country. Collaborating with Alqaedas Inc. in Puerto Rico, he honed his sound with guidance from influential figures like Kendo Kaponi and Pacho, gaining traction on an international level.
Not All Laughter
Behind the vibrant persona of The Joker is a story marked by challenges that could have broken even the strongest wills. “I’ve faced robberies, fraud, bad contracts, and people opposing my project,” he shares. But his unwavering faith and determination have allowed him to overcome every hurdle. “With God’s help, I’ve overcome it all.”
The Man Behind the Mic
Today, The Joker works alongside Road Manager Rafael de Jesús Cosme, famously known as Coco el de la Receta. Having collaborated with heavyweights like Ozuna, Arcángel, and Alexis & Fido, Coco’s expertise has been instrumental in The Joker’s leap to international recognition. Under the Trafficc Entertainment label, his first globally-recognized album is in the works—a project he promises will reflect his daily struggles, victories, and unfiltered reality.
Beyond the Music
For The Joker, his vision extends beyond personal success. “A few years from now, I see myself running an independent company, releasing more music, and helping new talents,” he reveals. His passion for nurturing the next generation of artists stems from his belief in music’s transformative power. “My goal is to grow my audience and have my music reach the masses who consume rap.”
His son, the muse behind his stage name and album concept, serves as a constant reminder of why he’s pushing boundaries in a fiercely competitive industry. “We are all the villain in someone’s story, but often it’s a story poorly told,” he says—a perspective that reflects not just his music but his outlook on life.
