Australian indie-rock outfit Square Dance Caller are back with an infectious, new single entitled “Somebody Like You.” Featuring grooving drums, riff-roaring guitars and playful synth lines, the track comes as a textually diverse offering that will be sure to pick you up and leave you wanting more. On top, vocals come drenched in emotion and work hand in glove with well-penned lyrics that are a match made in heaven for the accompanying live performance music video. Lyrically the track talks about finding someone and contemplating on how they would have affected the different stages of your life had they been there.
Speaking about the single, Brendan says: “I think we have all had somebody in our lives either romantically, or platonically, who’s a bit older or more mature and who seems so cool and confident. We either lusted after them or wished we had them in our corner teaching us all their moves. That’s what this song is all about.”
The group formed in 2021 and is the latest project from Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, and brothers Brendan and Michael Etherington. They decided to name the project Square Dance Caller, making a nod to their late grandfather’s tenure in the role. Thickening the band’s sound is proud Gumbaynggirr man Mat Hooler on keys and James Manning on bass. Live, the electrifying four-piece features a regular guest appearance from Melbourne saxophonist Bella McMahon.
Square Dance Caller manages to blend and merge old with new. Their infectious sound takes inspiration from the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, The Clash and Gorillaz, whilst they clearly stamp their own unique mark on the music also. Their refreshing sound has seen them be lauded by huge tastemakers and receive resounding success across indie music blogs, college radio and playlists throughout Europe and America.
Don’t just take our word for it though, “Somebody Like You”, which comes as the first single from the band’s forthcoming LP, garnered praise from Milky Music, The Music and The Partae, to name a few. With an upcoming UK tour to boot, the band look forward to sharing their new music with fans new and old.
