Cork-based singer-songwriter Sarah Hickey kicks off the run up to her forthcoming debut album with her new offering ‘Doesn’t Fit’. Off the bat, the track underlies her sombre and introspective vocals with gentle, acoustic chords and a mellow electric guitar line. The track builds up around the vocals, as they get more intense, the instrumentation follows, with evocative and steady drums. For the final chorus, the song becomes a supernova of instruments, with Sarah’s genial voice holding steadfast in the chaos before we hear everything fall away.
Discussing the new track, Sarah shares:
“The song ‘Doesn’t Fit’ is about feeling out of place and like nothing makes sense. The chorus came to me when I sat down to write last Autumn and when I listened back some time later I wrote the verses. They felt like a stream of consciousness so it felt very natural to write the song and when recording it with a band it fell together naturally too. I recorded this song in a house by the sea in Cork last November with ‘Catalyst’. They have been such a wonderful team to work with and I feel very close to the songs when recording. The whole experience was really beautiful and I feel very lucky spending my time making music and working with other like minded people. The cover art I painted for the song is a visual representation of the lyrical content and overall feel of the song. I wanted to include vague and uncertain elements and a colour palette that matches the way I see the song.”
Hickey has been flourishing in her musical ability, growing her own songs in the recording studio over the past year, with this release showing us she is ready to reveal the results of her hard work. Sarah’s quietly restrained power as an emotional being shines through her lyrics and performances. With recent performances in venues across Ireland, she has learnt more about her own sound and helped to develop it through others.
Aside from music, she expresses herself through painting, adding a unique layer to her work through bringing these paintings on the album covers to life with the music, as she stays in control of both creative endeavours.
With her debut album on the horizon, we wait in anticipation for more to come from this exciting new artist.
