Ryan Michael Forté: Songs for the Long Road

Ryan Michael Forté didn’t set out to be a performer. His first steps toward music were quiet ones—childhood dance sessions with his brother and a piano teacher’s gentle nudge to “try writing something of your own.” That offhand suggestion sparked a fire. By 14, he was piecing together earnest, if clumsy, compositions. By 16, he was playing coffeehouse sets and soaking in lessons from a high school coach who simply told him, “There’s still time.” For Forté, those three words weren’t just encouragement—they were a lifeline.

Today, Forté’s sound lives at the crossroads of Appalachian folk, bluegrass precision, and Persian melodic ornamentation. His music doesn’t fit easily into genre boxes, and that’s by design. “Genres are like dialects,” he says. “They’re just different ways of expressing the same truth.” That truth, for Forté, is emotional storytelling—mapping out life’s contradictions through song. Whether in small living room shows or quiet streaming moments between strangers, his measure of success remains simple: connection.

Like many independent artists, Forté balances a double life—teaching 25 music students by day, chasing sonic breakthroughs by night. But limitations have only deepened his creativity. His upcoming single, three years in the making, includes vocals recorded while seated, bass coaxed from detuned guitars, and reverb captured in the skeletal walls of an unfinished building. These aren’t production tricks; they’re testaments to his resourcefulness and a return to the uninhibited experimentation of his youth.

Now, he’s building something bigger. A series of narrative-driven EPs is underway—each one a self-contained chapter that will culminate in a full-length album. Parallel to this, Forté is writing a fantasy novel, adding another thread to his evolving identity as a storyteller. Despite the expanding canvas, he’s grounded in one core philosophy: sustainable creativity over burnout. “Shape your life rhythm now,” he tells young artists—advice that feels less like a warning and more like wisdom passed around a campfire.

As Forté prepares to share new music and stories, he isn’t chasing virality. Instead, he’s inviting listeners into what he calls his “vagabond family”—a space built on curiosity, warmth, and mutual respect. In a world obsessed with the next big thing, Forté reminds us of something deeper: that some artists don’t arrive all at once. They build slowly, steadily, and with heart. And when they finally do arrive, it’s impossible to imagine music without them.
